I was questioning the same thing, so I checked the dictionary before considering this photo, here's the definition as I read it (and I most certainly could be mis-interpreting):
1. Any of a large group of small invertebrate animals characterized, in the adult state, by division of the body into head, thorax, and abdomen, three pairs of legs and, usually, two pairs of membranous wings: beetles, bees, flies, wasps, mosquitos, etc. are insects.
2. Popularly, any of a group of small animals, usually wingless, including spiders, centipedes, wood lice, ticks, mites, etc.
I thought spiders are arachnids which is the definition of a scorpion?? |
Technically, you're right; spiders are arachnids and not insects. So are scorpions, ticks, and mites. But many people who speak English generalize the term "insect" to include arachnids and other small arthropods, even if it isn't scientifically correct. Feel free to make a photo of a spider. It will probably get at least one "doesn't meet the challenge" comment, but it won't be from me. |

I wouldn't complain if I were you. For the price of missing out on one challenge I would gladly ship you every bug from Indiana.
In August.
After it rained for 2 months straight at the start of the summer.
With West Nile around every corner.
And millipedes doing the backstroke in my basement.
I'd describe more what it's like, but I have to go drink my daily dose of DEET now. ;)

Key word there is "popularly." That's an indication that it's a colloquialism, something people just happen to say a lot. It comes down to the difference between a "prescriptive" definition (tells you what's correct, mandating how the language should be used) and a "descriptive" definition (tells you what people actually say, describing the language as it's used, without regard to its precise correctness).
I was being pedantic and precise for the sake of sarcasm when I commented that spiders and scorpions aren't insects. Your dictionary's merely pointing out that people call them insects anyway.

(Edited to comment that this picture is terrifyingly cool yet gross and I fixed the link so no one misses out.)

I had just downloadfed and printed the directions for inserting a link so just possibly I will get it right one of these times. I thought I wouldn't enter this creature - it might make everybody stop voting or delete me from the site or something. Anne

Can you get something just as good and unique for the challenge? |

What the heck is that thing, anyway? It sort of looks like a cross between a preying mantis and a stick.

I wish I could - I'll probably settle for pretty.
It is a Giant Walking Stick. I suspect it is related to the mantids.
I went looking - people keep them for pets.

It has now been raining for the last two days here in NJ. It is supposed to rain all week. The one challenge I really like, and I can't shoot a thing..... :(

I've seen ones that look like the 3rd one down on that web site (probably only once in my life). Your picture is amazing - the thing has leaves on it! I wonder what the dogs and cats would do with a giant walking stick in the house (Hmm, they might already think that's exactly what I am!) Hard to believe people keep those as pets... :-)

Earthworms on the sidewalk? (yes, yes, not really insects, but we've covered that)
Water skimmers in yucky puddles?
There's probably also plenty of insects inside your dry and welcoming home. I found a spider the size of New Jersey in my attic once.
My interest in this challenge is purely academic; I don't think I can stand to get close enough to a bug to actually take a good picture!

I am absolutely phobic about almost all insects until I have the camera in my hand then I am foolhardy...I have never figured that out, but it has given me some interesting spiders. |

Same here! I duck and flail my hands going under the lights from the driveway at night; come morning, and I'm out there with a camera right into the thick of em...

Nice job capturing the mantis - they are probably my favorite bug (I can't believe I can say I have a favorite!) besides the ladybug of course... |

Thanks...I must agree with you on the mantis being a favorite. There isn't quite much else which so resembles and alien...
...Zorak, anyone?

I took a few shots yesterday of some dragonflys near a pond. Thoes things are damn hard to photograph. I wish I could have gotten a lot clearer shot. I took about 40 photos, and about two of them turned out somewhat clear.
Heres one:
