I'm in the same boat jab, last night I got a great shot of a Bark Scorpion and I can't use it. (It was taken at 11:57pm dpc time on 8/31).

Great shots, my favorite is the dragonfly...

I feel your pain:

Shot yesterday :

Hover Fly
Butterfly+
Bee

and Saturday:

Grass Hopper
Dragon Fly
Another Dragon Fly

I hope I'll get lucky again this week.

Jacko,

I love the hover fly shot. My favorite of your 6. For some reason, the shots where I can look the insect in the eyes always appeals to me :-)

OK, I live in iceland and I have to start looking for some insects to take picture of. In 1. place we don't have so much of insects here in Iceland and in 2. place then most of them are dead at this time at year.
So this is not the best time for people in Iceland to submit in this challenge.

I expect at least 8 out of the top 10 to be macro shots... and most probably anothe lovely ribbon for dear Jacko. :o)

I took a great spider shot (by my standards) Saturday and was starting to get miffed until I realized they aren't insects.

Its getting pretty chilly here in Germany. I hope the bugs will come out and play this week! I took this one the other day.

Yeah, but you guys just had the advantage in the desolation challenge, given your volcanic landscape. Swings and roundabouts.

I was questioning the same thing, so I checked the dictionary before considering this photo, here's the definition as I read it (and I most certainly could be mis-interpreting):

1. Any of a large group of small invertebrate animals characterized, in the adult state, by division of the body into head, thorax, and abdomen, three pairs of legs and, usually, two pairs of membranous wings: beetles, bees, flies, wasps, mosquitos, etc. are insects.
2. Popularly, any of a group of small animals, usually wingless, including spiders, centipedes, wood lice, ticks, mites, etc.

I thought spiders are arachnids which is the definition of a scorpion??

What bad timing. I have this shot I did a while back...would work well for the challenge. Maybe I can find them again and have them re-enact for me! :)

Jacko - the ribbon's all yours! Superb shots - and so clean too.

Someone is having a laugh. =(

i am totally thrilled by this challenge!
Insects are my favorite things, most of my portfolio is made up of insect macros.
My last several challenges have scored so low, it is about time to get back in there.
Some of them are this this, and this

I hate this challenge!!!!!!!!! how someone living in south Texas can have not a single insect in the yard is beyond me...

grrrrrrrr..

What I've learned so far. I would much rather do studio shots, I have no patience and it's probably best if forget about doing anything with live subjects...

Hey, honey, do we have any more formaldehyde???

I wouldn't mind that a bit! It won't happen...but it sounds nice. Thanks for the complement though.
My problems:
#1 I can't compete with the SLR's
#2 There are no exotic bugs in New Jersey

Edited link Anne (you must copy the link to the image out of edit mode - try clicking on 'View Photo Page' link to do this)! That's a great shot teeming with life.

Thanks - I had just tried it and gone back to see what I had done wrong. What did I do or not do?
