Which lenses do you think are the best FAST walk around lenses? I have the Canon 17-85 but often find that it's not fast enough in darker situations (like inside auditoriums, etc. at school). I find that I end up using my 85mm a lot in situations like that, but would like something with more than one focal length. I'd like to get another lens, but not sure yet which one would be best to get. Thanks!

The problem here is that (for canon) the fastest zoom lenses are still just 2.8 lenses. Never is that gonna come close to the 85 1.8. If you need fast, you need primes. However, if 2.8 will do it for ya, the tamron 28-75 is a great place to look, I just got mine and it's really a bargain for the money. The 24-70L 2.8 is another option but it goes for about $1k.

Since I have the Canon 60mm f/2.8 Macro & the 85mm f/1.8, what would you suggest then? Would the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 mentioned be fast enough since it has the IS? When I'm just outside or somewhere with a lot of light the 17-85 is fine, but I find myself getting aggravated with it when there's not enough light. Also, sometimes the pictures are fine and other times it seems like they're too soft. That's why I was thinking about trying to find a better (fast) walk around.

well the first question to ask yourself when thinking about IS is, do you need the speed to stop motion, or do you just need to hold the shot longer? In any event, you could just use a tripod.

I would say probably to stop motion. Also, we'll be going to Disney World next month and I'd like a faster walk around so that I can not only take pictures outside, but if we're inside a building with a show, etc. I can still take good pics then too. (it would sure make it easier to just have one lens to lug around all day too) Would the 17-55 f/2.8 IS or the 24-70 F2.8 L be fast enough for that?

on a 20D i'd say maybe a 17-55 2.8 lens might be perfect for that disney world situation. I think tamron also makes a 17-50 2.8 but without IS for much less than the canon. Oh and remember not be be afraid to use 1600/3200 to get a shot, get the shot, then worry about noise. From my tests with large prints even 3200 is acceptable from a 20D.
Hope we've helped some. |

You keep mentioning zooms that have 50mm in the range. Why not go with the 50mm/1.8? We all get addicted to zoom, but forget we can often walk closer or further. You aren't going to find a cheaper, faster or better lens for the price...

True. And the 50 would be very fast. Thanks!

I hope to get mine back soon - it took a little trip to Canon in California. I wish I could have accompanied it, but I didn't fit in the box. Focusing gears are stripping or some such. But don't let that deter you - it's a great little lens!!
