I'm running Xubuntu now. A little to minimalist for my taste, but it is easy on the resources. Now I'm downloading the Kubuntu ISO. Gonna give that a try.

Can ya tell I don't use that laptop for a lot of serious stuff? :-)

Yes, my wife uses Linux. But only because I refuse to support Windows in my household.

My wife uses Linux too and she wouldn't have it any other way.

That was actually the first mistake I made. I tried to install a rpm instead of a deb which is what my linux is based on.

Any way to get a DVD codec for free that you know of. I am definitly missing some of the codecs for the media player.

Google Debian libdvdcss. You need to havethe css library to get around the copy-protecton on DVDs. Most majordistros don't officially support libdvdcss for legal reasons, but it is available for all of them.

To get DVD support, as well as loads of other video codecs and a bunch of other extremely useful stuff in Ubuntu, try either of these installers ...

I've settled on Ubuntu. I really like this distro. Now, I'm going through trying to break things on purpose :-) Just doing some tweaks.

I found it was hard to break, in fact doing all the stuff I did would have broken windows a long time ago.

What programs are out there that allow you to install some xp software? I have a DVD movie program for my palm that I would like to have on the Ubuntu.

there is an app called Wine that will let you run Windows apps. I've never used it, but I hear it can handle some demanding apps.

I just installed it. I will keep you posted on how it works. Looks like I can have itunes which would be nice.

How do you go about installing the software. an you just run Windows Installers in Wine?
07/04/2006 12:39:45 AM · #67
some of the smaller (weaker) apps you just run the installer. Other apps (the usefull ones) you usually need to install under windows and then copy the files and registry settings over manually.

nothing seems to work PERFECT. Fonts are a common problem. Photoshop loads really slow but once it's going it's good. On the Wine website be sure to check out the application database for tips on installing and running. Sometimes people claim stuff doesn't work that does now - there have been alot of advancements in the past few versions. be sure to update it often.

I just tweaked my desktop, and added a removable drive bay. Now I just have a windows drive and a linux drive.

My fast notebook won't load ubunta. I was going to replace windows on it, but the cd drive acted like it was loading for about 3 hours and all I got to was the select a language prompt.

I'm feeling pretty damn accomplished. PS7 is now fully functional on my Ubuntu powered laptop Install went smoothly, but had to do some research to get it to run.

I don't see any performance decrease compared to Windows on this machine. Ifany, I'd almost say performance was better.

Might try loading RSE tommorrow.
