Our family is finally getting to go on a short vacation to Duluth MN July 16th to the 18Th. Actually it is a two fold trip, our youngest daughter has to go see her neurologist and we a going to stay a couple of extra days for a much needed break. So I am looking for some ideas for things to do with the kids while we are over there. We plan on hitting the aquarium and things like that. And of course taking the camera along since there will be many photo-ops with the kids. Any ideas or insight would be greatly apperciated.

I'd highly recommend taking the 30 mile trip north of Duluth on US Hwy 61. It's 26 miles to Two Harbors and another 7 to Gooseberry falls State Park. A few miles further north and you are at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. Both are highly recommended if you have the time.
The lighthouse is photogenic but is best shot from the lakeshore down below. You'll get very dramatic shots from the lake via a trail leading down from the lighthouse. Split Rock
Gooseberry Falls State Park is also a "must-see". From the visitor's center, you can take trails up the falls further inland to the Superior Hiking Trail or towards Lake Superior. The kids will have fun climbing around the falls or skipping rocks down by the water outlet into the lake.
If it's a nice, sunny day, expect both to be crowded as these our favorite locales for most Minnesotans! |

Yay, a Minnesota thread! Anyway, As jstrickl said, gooseberry falls is great as is Split Rock and Two Harbors. I know the USAF Thunderbird squadron is performing on July 8th and 9th over the lake, but you'll miss that by a week. You can just walk around, there are tons of things to see and do. Just walk along the lake and you'll find plenty.
