I'm planning on starting a before and after series of pictures. I have currently made a section for it in my portfolio - though I don't currently have any of my really impressive images uploaded there - they are all on my photo blog.

If you like this before and after let me know and I will start posting more, along with THE EXACT STEPS TO REPLICATE THE EFFECTS.

Yup...no $10 DVD's (just kidding Joey)...just free techniques from someone learning like all of you.

I'm a fan :-)

I like how you've got them side-by-side in one image - it makes it very easy to see the differences.

Added to my favorites and will keep an eye on this. I really like what you've done to the sky.

Ok...seems to be a good bit of interest. Here are the steps...

If you have any questions about any of the steps, or need any help with a photo of your own that you want some tips on, please dont hesitate to PM me or email me. I'm always looking to help people because it helps me also.

1. Edit > Free Transform to straighten the horizon and then crop.
2. Levels
3. Slight S Curve
4. Magnetic lasso to select the boat and its wake > curves adjustment (drag center toward upper left a little bit to brighten).
5. Select water and do the same curves adjustment to brighten.
6. Select all > copy merged > paste new layer;
6a. filter > Lucis Art > exposure @ 100%
6b. filter > Lucis Art > sculpture @ 20%
6c. create layer mask and paint with white airbrush over the boat and water to remove effects of the sculpture control on the boat and water.
7. Select sky > curves adjustment layer > pull center of curve down to darken.
8. select all > copy merged > paste new layer; Neat Image > create mask and again paint away the boat and the water so only the sky is neat imaged (lucis art's sculpture filter adds a great deal of noise that you need to get rid of)
9. filter > sharpen > unsharp mask (300%, 0.3, 0)
10. select all > copy merged > paste new layer; dodge and burn the sky, boat, boat's wake.
11. duplicate layer > filter > Virtual Photographer > Slide 2, 25 ASA, photographic style on/off (checked), warm, effect = contrast
11a. create black mask and paint in the effects of virtual photographer on the sky only.

Thats about it folks...Lucis art is a MUST HAVE plugin for photoshop. Virtual Photographer is also a very very powerful tool that everyone should make use of because BOTH ARE FREE! Together, they are my secret weapons that I just in a great deal of photos.

A more exact way to do this is to use the measure tool (located under the eye dropper) to draw a line on the horizon. Then select Edit>Rotate>Arbitrary>Enter and the horizon levels itself...

Thanks for the tip...the free transform is just easier for me to use, I turn on the grid and straighten until it is aligned with the grid lines.
