Yes, but that really isn't an upgrade, now is it.
More like a downgrade.

Seems Adobe is trying to become the Microsoft of digital media. Macromedia, Pixmantec, who's next?

They've been monopolizing the field for some time, particularly since they bought out PageMaker. The real problem is that they also control the basic program which produces almost all non-photographic output (PostScript) -- this vertical integration gives them a real competitive advantage in the publishing world.

Yeah, I used to use Photostyler. When Adobe bought Aldus they killed Photostyler and it took them years to incorporate the features into Photoshop. They offered a reduced price "upgrade" to Photoshop but at the time Photoshop was a terrible product compared to Photostyler.

Note that when Adobe got Macromedia, they also got Fontographer -- the tool for creating/editing PostScript and TrueType fonts, and FreeHand, the only viable competition to Illustrator other than (maybe!) CorelDraw.

ROFL - Adobe made PostScript! don't u think they already had an application to make Typefaces? ;)

and CorelDraw is its own competition! i don't know about newer versions, but it couldn't even import its own EPS files back in the day! :)

Of course, but could you buy it? I don't know if you can buy Fontographer anymore either...

makes good business sense. big fish says lets let the small fish do all the legwork getting a product to market - testing it - and fine tuning it. then well swoop in with our big fat checkbook and buy them out...

Nothing tacit about it, Adobe bought up the superior product rather than having to compete against it. And who are the winners and losers here? Adobe is a winner, Pixmantec is a winner, and we consumers are losers. We will not have access to the superior product, and we will continue to be offerd the high priced alternative. Isn't it wonderful the way the capitalist system works?
