Hey I just finished editing some skateboarding shots that I took last week and though you might be intrested to see them. One is normal and 3 sihouhettes.
Taken with a Peleng 8mm fisheye. Heres the link to them:

Ever consider getting an external flash or several?
You'll find that most skate photos are not taken during the middle of the day (at least not on really bright days), and some form of lighting is used. There's a reason for that.

I have in fact. :) I'm saving up for a 580EX Speedlight. It will take some time but I'm very excited about it. But theres a problem with getting many flashes. Money money money :P

| Those are some great shots. You did a good job on getting the photos at the right time and placing the skater so the fish makes him look higher. |

Wonderful work! And about the flashes... pish tosh. Its great to see what we "talented" photographers can do on our own with luck and timing and you nailed it.

The 580ex is a little expensive IMO.. I think you'd be better off with a dedicated manual handlemount unit like the Sunpak 555, Vivitar 285, or Metz equivelant. I got my 555 for 100 bucks; you could probably get 3 and the sync cords for less than the price of the 580ex. The Sigma 500 Super that B&H sells for around $200 is a really good shoemount TTL flash, it's comparable to the 580.
My ideal lighting setup would be two 555's, a Sigma 500, a pocket wizard transmitter and 3 recievers, and 3 lightstands or small tripods. That way I'd be set for a fill flash for portraits and indoor shots and the like with the 500, or I could use all 3 at different points for BMX and skating. The total cost would be around $1200 though - the pocket wizards aren't cheap.
CalamitysMaster - Adding flashes surely does not diminish the talent or timing required, quite the opposite in fact. |
