I use 1&1 and am still on my free 3 years! They have 25% off right now which comes to $2.25 a month and $5.99 a year for domain name.
I found my site to be "kinda" easy. I used PHPNuke and Gallery on my site. Still have to convert my photos over to Gallery 2.1 so that I can have more options for what it looks llike, but it is pretty decent at this time.
The only thing that I added to my site, besides customizing some modules in phopnuke (IT IS FREE as is Gallery!!) is the top javascript bar.

Go get your own domain and hosting. I use Bluehost.com

$130 for two years :)
Although I still have yet to finish my website :P

ARRGGHHH!
I just had the WORST experience with bluehost.com
My site, (and 865 other websites) was down for over 30 hours, and they never gave an explaination for over 24 hours!!! I called support 3 times, and was brushed off. Many users posted in bluehosts forums, asking why their sites were down, and the admins DELETED posts in order to hide the problem. They finally let people post, but were still deleting feedback that was negative to bluehost.

Needless to say, I switched and HIGHLY recommend NOT using bluehost. The service is not consistant, and the customer support is NOT good.

That's an issue with many hosts offering the cheap (low cost) hosting packages. Normal server loads allow for 200-250 average sites max to allow the servers to function nominally. Many of these low cost hosts will offer huge disk space and unlimited bandwidth and have a few thousand sites on a single server thereby causing server issues.

While it's a bit more expensive it's worth it in the long run to pay the 10-20 bucks a month if clients rely on your site being up to see proofs. Or if you expect to portray a professional image.

I do use a cheap host for my smaller clients that have smaller needs and I usually have some major issue at least monthly.
For clients with more serious requirements and need for reliability I do have them on more expensive accounts and it's worth it as I don't have to go through the troubleshooting trying to figure out if it's my site or not.

In the long run you always get what you pay for. Especially with hosting. Seriously, if the difference is 40 bucks over the course of a year, it's worth it. The only host I've found worth its dollar and true to it's word is flarehosting.com. I've NEVER had an issue with them that they haven't resolved within 12 housrs and I've NEVER had a site down longer than an hour in over 3 years I've been with them. 9.95/mth for their starter. You won't regret it.

There are quite a few Content managers that can be found at //www.sourceforge.net .

The beauty of a Content Management System (CMS) is that you can edit your site on-line without special software. You might also want to look into blogging software there.

Most require that your host support PHP and most take advantage of MySQL.

Joomla is a good CMS. My biggest problem with recommending someone go with a CMS package is that for those not familiar with FTP, mysql, php, chmod etc etc etc just installing the CMS can be more work than learning simple HTML and building a site.

I have to say for ease of use and instant results you would be hard pressed to find anything better than the mac web site. For $99 a year you get a full account - You are able to back up all your files and personal info etc and the best thing is you can have a web site up and running within 30 minutes of starting.
The link name may not be the best but for instant EASY results that you do yourself it's great.
Here is mine - //homepage.mac.com/jblaylockrayner/Menu6.html

Good luck

Many hosts offer one click installs or pre-installs of Mambo/Joomla, drupal, or any number of CMS's as well as blogging software like Wordpress that don't require you to deal with those issues at all.

Tony (agwright) uses a website called clickpic for his site www.antonywright.com

They have different styles to use, looks very nice once it's finished...

Does cost per year, but it looks easy to setup?!?

Does seem to be a bit out-rageous... hell even Yahoo hosting is cheaper than that.

I was thinking about setting up a site through Betterphoto.com. Does anyone know anything about this?
It is expensive, but the sites are easy to create and handle. They also provide PayPal links to take credit card orders through your site, so you can sell your stuff to pretty much any buyer with ease (very intriguing).

Anyone with experience?

there are a few online gallery programs for free.

for bigger galleries you can use coppermine, //coppermine-gallery.net/index.php

for smaller galleries you can use jalbum, //jalbum.net/

... i use jalbum because it can do things like flash, which is handy for giving another level of protection to your photos.

my gallery is created using jalbum AND coppermine. check them both out at my site:

ICDSoft.com, Wordpress, and Gallery for my "friends and family" site.

Pixelpost for my photoblog.

It's all pretty easy if you don't mind reading the help forums if/when you get stuck.

(edit to say I've had no education whatsoever in any type of internet code or design - but I've been able to trudge forward, so don't be overwhelmed at first - one step at a time)

ps ... this is an old thread, not sure who I'm even talking to :)
