| I've had the film Canon Rebel GII for over a year now, and I've had a Sigma 70-300mm tele for it for awhile now, too. It's the lens with the built-in DL Macro Super, and it has always taken beautiful pictures. When I first got my Digital Rebel XT it worked fine with the lens (because all EOS lenses are made to work with any camera in the series), but in the past few weeks, the lens will only take a picture when the aperture is at it's largest possible opening (4.0 when zoomed out, 5.6 when zoomed in). When I take a picture at any aperture smaller than the max opening, the camera freezes up and displays "Err 99" flashing on the LCD Panel. When I take a picture like this, I can hear the mirror locking up for about a second (no matter what exposure time the camera is set to) before it displays this troublesome message. The lens still works fine with my film camera. It is also the ONLY lens that does this with the Digital Rebel XT--I have three other lenses that still work great with it...just nothing telephoto :( I just don't understand why the lens would work fine to begin with and then all the sudden only work at the largest aperture. Thanks for reading, I really hope someone can give me some good advice to fix this problem (and avoid high charges at the camera shop!). |

Err 99 is the catch-all error but a lot of the time it is the communication between the lens and the camera that is causing the problem.
Option number 1 is to clean the contacts.

Definitely clean the contasts as Colette mentioned. If that doesn't cure it, it could very well be a stuck diaphragm (the sliding plates tha make the aperture). Since it locks up when you try to stop down, I suspect that's what it is.
One way you can test the aperture function is to press the DoF Preview button (at four o'clock position near lens mount looking at front of camera). If it locks up when this button is pressed and does it each time, then it's probably a stuck diaphragm, and the lens will need service. |

| Probably is the diaphragm... the contacts are fine. The reason it still takes good film pictures is probably because I normally use a wide aperture when I use my tele anyway. Guess I'll have to take it in to the shop then. Thanks guys. |
