What do most people use for photo management. I just use the default directorys where WinXP puts files in MyPicture. That's good for a chronological ordering of photos, but it would be nice if there was some way to categorise all my images by class (Portrait, landscape, emotive, etc), as well as add search words for peoples names or locations, or times of day, or anything else.

It would also be nice if it was smart enough to keep track of backed up photos as well, so I can index photos, and archive them, or maybe keep a copy of the index information on the backup disks, as well as a global online index.

I've heard of various programs by ArcSoft, Canon, Picasa. I haven't really tried them out. I just wanted to get people's opinions of which ones to look at. Cheap software is good, but I'm willing to pay if it's worth it.

So, fire away...What are your suggestions? :)

I use Picasa2 from Google. Never had a problem with it.

No, it does not mess with the exif.

No, it does not apply changes permanently.

Yes, you have to export pictures if you want to save those changes to a file that you can upload. Think of it as a "save as" button.

Simpleviewer also has a plugin for creating flash slideshows from your stuff directly from Picasa.
