When your shooting raw does it affect your parameters? Does that make sense? Or did I say it the wrong way?

I know raw photos are not as sharp as .jpg so do I need to turn up my sharpness in paramters or just sharpen it more in photoshop?

no the parameters shouldn't affect the raw file.

I believe (not 100%) that the parms are applied to the imbedded JPG but most people don't use the imbedded image for anything.

No, none of your parameters affect the Raw image. It is what it's name suggests...raw. All processing of the image must be done in post process.

No is the answer you were looking for but....

I was meaning the larger JPG (there is also a thumb) contained within the RAW file...

See the section...
0x2007-Root-JpgFromRaw-The embedded JPEG image (2048x1360 pixels for the 300D with Canon firmware)

I cannot find a reference but believe the creation of this embedded JPG also uses the parms set for straight JPG (although it's certainly possible they use defaults rather than the parms).

The short answer is, the "parameters" have no effect on your RAW file; white balance, contrast, sharpening, stuff like that. You can adjust it all to any level you want to in the RAW processor. All you need to worry about is correct focus and exposure and basics like that. You also can't change the ISO after shooting.

Interestingly enough, I'm currently doing my RAW processing in the EOS Viewer Utility that came with my 20D (it's a long story) and that particular RAW processor actually DOES read the parameters so the image it shows me that I "work on" is actually displayed with whatever WB etc the camera was set to. This is fairly convenient as a starting point using auto WB; you always get something that you can at least look at without squinting...

Just shot over 600 RAW's this evening... What a great thing!

And what a CF card HOG! Yowch!

Next time, I'm taking a second 4GB card with me...

Crazy Silliness...

I would also make a recommendation to check out the Canon Digital Photo Professional Software... nice operation... I like it even better because it cost me nothing extra!

It's missing Noise reduction that is present in Adobe Raw converter, but apparently that can also be done in batch... just gotta find out how... :)
