I just purchased one these. I've never owned a diesel before. Anybody have any suggestions or tips or anything I should know about?

if it is a manual... less you are pulling something, its best to start off in second gear. Iether that or hope you have five minutes to get onto the road.

Personaly I don't care for the cummins diesels. But thats just me.

Not sure how cold it gets in the winter there in Iowa, but make sure you plug that thing in if you park it outside in the cold.

Also when I had my Powerstroke I used the Rotella T when changing the oil. That stuff rocks!

If it's an automatic, make sure you turn off the over drive when towing stuff.

Oh yea: FOLLOW THE BREAK IN SCHEDULE!! If you do that engine will last FOREVER!

All I know is you have purchase the finest piece of american engineering known to man. My uncle is a vp for Cummins Rocky mountian and he has those trucks pull into the shop with 500,000 - 1 million miles on them!

Oil, Oil, Oil, and take it easy on it, and it will tow and haul anything and last for ever.

I have an 03 Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel and it is a hoss. The main things you'll need to be concerned with other than oil changes are air and fuel filter changes. Much more valuable a change for a diesel over a gas engine. On the box that encases your air filter you'll see a gauge. Just keep an eye on it and it'll let you know when to change it. After the change just push the button on top to reset. Change the fuel filter around every 15,000 miles. Your manual will have a maintenace schedule in it. Follow it and that truck will last you for many years to come.

Also, the truck has a code check built right in. If you push your odometer reset button in, turn the key to "acc" and wait, the truck will do a diagnostic check. If anything is amiss it will pop up a code in your digital odometer screen. Right now it should show you, "00 00". Then you just call the dealer or check online to decode the numbers. Very cool feature.

I see they have upped the horse-power and torque since '03 to 325hp and 610ft/lbs. Do ya ever think about getting a new one? I was looking at the 2500 HEMI. I have a 5th wheel camper I tow all over the place. That and fuel mileage were one reason for the purchase. The other reason I bought it was I drove off the lot with a 2500 Quad Cab SLT for $32000.

Well, picked it up on Friday, in the shop on Monday. Engine coolant is spraying all over under the hood. Is this a bad omen?

Sorry to hear about your problems.

The people on this site are very helpful. They have helped us troubleshoot many potential problems with our truck. It's like the DPC for diesel engines.

That's what warranties are for huh! It was just a bad hose clamp.

32 grand isn't bad at all. Mine is the SLT 4x4 too with painted bumpers and grille and I gave around that for it. I haven't considered getting a new one as when I bought this one I planned on keeping it for 10 years or so. I've owned it 3 years now and it only has 34k on it. I have 305hp at 2900rpm and 555lb ft torque at 1400 so there's plenty there if I need it. I can also get a Triple Dog chip for around 5 to 600 bucks that will give you up to 230 more horses. Here she is in all her splendor. Nasty and grimy with all the brake dust too! As you can tell it's raining so maybe she'll get a good wash job now :D
