I love this photo and saw that he did the conversion to B&W with the channel mixer. I use this method too but I can't quite get this depth to it. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or hints for conversion to B&W like this?

Basically I use the philisophy that the three settings should add up to 100%. I'm not at home right now so I can't quite remember what the settings are but I think I set them to something like 40%, 40%, 20%....I believe!!

I know of two ways of using the channel mixer, and well, I can't get consistent results with either.

For non-basic challenges I create 2 Hue/sat layers. The bottom one is set to color blend mode and you adjust those sliders to change the image's tonal qualities (even by channel). The top layer is just a plain de-sat and normal blend mode.
I then add a curves layer and increase the contrast.

I did this last night - not as dramatic, but she's 17 and probably doens't want to look like him! LOL

You are welcome. I use it a lot and my top pics are all B&W :)

I use channels and high pass filters to create BWs.

You can also use the Gorman BW action from ATN Central. Let the action run throughout and slide the opacity to about 80-95%. Adjust the curves and levels as well.

Cheers,

Rikki

What are high pass filters?

Additionally Gorman recommmended using a high pass filter to burn and dodge various areas of the B&W photot.

I tried to hide it. No bokeh in this one...how'd you find it? MK was first to find it though.
