Hello everyone! I just wanted to drop a line and say hello. I stumbled upon dpc a little over a week ago, and since then have been reading the forums and going through the challenge pictures and checking everything out.
To be honest...Im no photographer. I just like taking pictures...thats pretty much it. Heck, Ive had my camera about a year now, and only a month ago was the first time I thought..hrmm...lets see what happens when I take a pic in something other than auto! And Ive been figuring out what all the other little buttons and features of my camera are too...finally (are you cringing yet?)
I guess then, its fair to say I will be doing this for fun...but then also I like challenges and learning something new...so Im really looking forward to pressing myself into something I really know nothing about and actually learning something.
Im sort of nervous about voting and commenting, mainly because I figure...who am I to judge? So I suppose its better to wait till Ive done a challenge or two before I start voting...or...would it still be okay if I voted? If I do vote and Im way off...dont hurt me! :o) Anyway, from what Ive seen so far, you seem like a really great group of people..and Im really looking forward to this new venture. |

Candice - fear not the DPC gang. We're really a fun group and all started out just as you are. This is a great place t learn and grow. Ask lots of questions in the forums and you'll get many different viewpoints to learn from.
Welcome to DPC

Hey, welcome to insanity. :-) Yeah, we have a great group of folks here, most nuts, but still good people.
Post away in the forums. We don't bite, wel, we don't bite hard :-)
And, vote. No better way to learn than by taking critical looks at the works of others and if you are impressed by the work, we all like 10's :-)
Hang around and have a good time.

Hi Candice, welcome!
This is a great place to learn. It sounds like you got the photography bug already, so you're in the right place :)
Don't be nervous about voting or commenting. You don't have to be an expert to vote or comment, and I think comments from non-experts can be quite good because they look at things with new eyes, and see things that experts might miss. Sometimes it helps to just say what you like about a photo in a comment. Anyway.
I hope you enjoy it here.

Welcome. :) Don't be scared, most of us are very friendly (if a bit strange). Please do vote and comment when you feel moved to. Your opinion is your opinion regardless of your skill and still certainly valid. It's possible you get some slightly unfriendly responses every now and then but that's normal...just shrug them off. You're apt to find that you learn quite a bit from commenting on other people's stuff.
Do you have any stuff upload anywhere for us to look at? If not, looking forward to seeing your challenge entries! |

Welcome, jump in and have fun... your straight jacket should be ready in just a few...
Seriously, just jump on in a vote, you know what you like and appeals to you.
As ShutterPug stated ask a lot of questions. You will get answers quite quickly. This place is open at all hours and there is always someone just ready to force share their opinion with you.
Have fun and enjoy... |

Dont be afraid of voting (keep what you voted to yourself, voting rule #1), but do becareful when commenting - some people can get very sensitive to negative remarks on their photographs (extra, extra, read all about it in the Rants section)
welcome to the site - and remember, I'm just a talking crayon. |

Welcome, Candice. To this other excellent advice, may I add: steer well clear of our resident maniac art_roflmao. You've also been warned off of the cheeseman (fotomann_forever), which is good. Also, when you see technical questions being answered by Kirbic, sit up and pay attention. He's like God Himself on matters technical. For general knowledge, listen to GeneralE :-) He spreads a lot of it around, as do I...
R.
And, oh yeah, listen to MK; she's a fount of knowledge in a most irreverent and fascinating form :-)

Type in allcaps when talking to Bear. He's a nice guy, but a bit hard of hearing...

Welcome to the site. It took me a while to get interested enough to enter a challenge, but once I did I was hooked. The amount of knowledge you can extract from this site and the people on it is incredible.
Just always make sure that you keep photography fun. Don't let the negative comments or bad scores drag you down. Take what is said in the comments, process it through your "critisism calculator" to figure out how much you pay attention to the critisism.
For example, I received a comment stating "stop showing off your ipods". Not very useful if you ask me. But on the same photo I recieved a comment saying "Nice perspective/angle. Few hot spots are a little distracting." That's a lot more useable advice.
I've seen many people get frusterated with the comments/ratings, so just be cautious to not let it get you down! Can't wait to see some photo's.

LMAO! Oh man, Im sitting here reading your responses and have this cheshire grin on my face...thanks for all the tips! Cheese...nudity...Pugs all 10's...Bear gets CAPS!!! Got it! I think Im ready for my blue now! hehe...
But really, thanks for the advice! Im definitely listening up, and Ill remember to bookmark this to show you all when I start driving everyone crazy with questions (dont worry, Ill at least search around for an answer first!)
Im on myspace and some friends and I *tried* to do a 365 pic a day challenge...that lasted about 10 days for me *sigh* But here are some pics I took from that:
Bridge going into St. Pete, FL
Rearview mirror view of St. Pete Bridge
My daughter at her school bookfair
Also, I saw a thread in here about minors joining in on this, and seriously thinking of letting my daughter in on it once I figure out the ropes...maybe this is something we can do together. She's 9 and took these pics while on a road trip. She actually figured out my camera along the way and had some fun with it. I like her pics way more than my own! Grrrrr..hehe
Clouds from the car window
Goofing off
A pic of me talking on the cell phone
The editing I generally do is levels and contrast... I read about curves on here and tried testing it out on some pics of mine..and my brain started leaking out of my ear, so yeah..I have a lot to learn!
--Thanks for the tip on the links fotomann...!!
