I think it's rather nuts myself lol, but my husband thinks this is what we're going to do when he retires from the Coast Guard in 15 years.

He is BIG into bbq. Doesn't even have a business but already the word is out. He's actually going to be getting licensed next month, has his name, flyer, ect all that made up. NOBODY around here does decent slow smoked pulled pork.
So he's doing catering- has had 3 gigs so far in the past 2 months not to mention all the parties he's done on base in the past 2 years. Yay for him! Can you tell I'm proud? hehehehe

Anyhow, he thinks we should cater for weddings and I'll do the photography. I have NOOOOOO desire whatsoever to do wedding photography. Not my thing, don't want to go there. I suppose I could if I had the right eqpt and some practice- have been invited to tag along on some wedding shoots over the summer with a family friend. But really, it's just not me. Do you have to dress up to do weddings? cause I don't like dressin up lol.

So he thinks we should call this future business "The Barr's Pigs and Pics". Yes, I laughed my head off when he said it.

So what do ya'll think?

personally I want a bed and breakfast somewhere on the OR coast or WA mountains. But nooo, he wants pigs and pics.

15 years - lol! I think he has time on his side to sway you :)

Just don't call the bnb 'Barr's Pigs n Pics', people will think they'll wind up on the net. ;)

LOL

and that 15 years is probably going to go by fast too lol.

No if we ever opened a bnb he says we should call it the "odd couples last resort" lmao.

As long as we can do bbq on the west coast I am fine with it lol. I just want to be back where there are mountains and it's not 80 in the middle of the night lol.

Somone here from Kiwiland or there abouts posted wedding pics a few weeks back - the photog, a member here, was in jeans and biker jacket...here in PA most wear suits and one lady wears a man's tux. I am not that far gone, but i do wear a tie to weekend weddings (not weekday ones, sorry)

pulled pork is a southern thing. i guess if you guys there can get teh rest of use pay $4 for a coffee, folks there might buy pigs in ketchup.

lol Prof! Well we're in VA right now, and bbq's big, but no good restaurants or caterers in the parts really. But back home there is a bbq joint that is supposed to be good. My husband has actually been emailing back and forth with the owner of it for quite some time now.
Anything can work foodwise in Seattle I think. It's a melting pot. But we don't want to retire IN Seattle. I'm liking the bnb idea though. Have a chuckwagon style bnb.

15 years to plan it lol.

If you are in the Detroit area, I could see about doing some photography for that venture...

I think it's better to not mix the two concepts. There's nothing that prevents you two from having multiple businesses.

As an aside, in the Bay Area there is little that passes for decent BBQ. If you could settle for hills instead of mountains with the added benefit of the ocean and summer fog, please come here and start your BBQ business. We won't even attempt to make you get dressed up and photograph weddings.

Congratulations to your husband! That's a great business and it sounds like he will do well.

I'm curious why he is interested in weddings? As someone who has catered for many weddings, I can say it's extremely stressful and not always rewarding. Has he thought about doing other events too? Down here there are BBQ vendors at almost every festival, fair, race etc. Those people look like they are working hard, but having fun.

I predict that you will be elbow deep in BBQ long before you have a chance to think about taking photos. However, if he does end up catering events, and you somehow manage to avoid schlepping pork, you could set up a booth selling photos of the event.

I'm thinking of a local sailboat race where the photographer took shots of everyone during the race and at the end sold personalized prints, T-shirts etc.

Good luck to both of you. Entrepreneurism is very exciting!

That was Anastasia, I think her an Kiwiness are actually in Germany right now.... maybe, dunno. But she was doing it for a friend, so that gives you some leeway I guess.
