The few submissions I've made on this site have all had comments relating to their lighting. One of my problems is that I only have the built-in flash available to me. This may be a little bit of ignorance of my camera but is it possible to have this flash fire multiple times during a single exposure or do i need an external flash for that?

What is a good (not too expensive) external flash to look at for the 350D?

You're definitely going to need a flash unit if you want it to fire in burst. I haven't done much researchon which units for Canon strobe like you are asking though.

BTW, most of the flashes that do strobe only do it with the flash in manual mode, no TTL for that function.

Your profile says you only have 1 challenge so far?
And on that photo it looks like you used natural light from a window, you could try waiting until later in the day so that light is less harsh or close the curtains if they are thin and white to diffuse the light. just a suggestion.

Comments on my 2nd entry (which is still be voted on) have mentioned the lighting too. I know it's only two entries but it seems to be a common thread so I think lighting is something I do need to learn to understand better.

Go to Home Depot or Lowes or whereever and buy some halogen work lamps. They are cheap and work fairly well and are really good to learn to light with. They do get a bit hot, but for the money, you can't beat them.
