| So I'm taking photos at the in-laws 50th Anniversary this weekend, and my camera stops working. I changed batteries and changed lens, but I still couldn't see anything through the eyepiece. The camera/lens was hunting for focus, but there was just blackness. On closer inspection I see where the mirror retracted into the ceiling of the camera. In a fit of desperation, and also because I have to send the camera in for repair anyway I hooked two fingernails on the edge of the mirror and pulled it back down to the proper position. The camera is working fine, but I still don't know what happened. Earlier I had switched lens with my S-I-L so she could could check out my 70-200mm. I used the stock lens from her Rebel 350 XT. Any ideas? |

| Like any intermittent mechanical problem, you really won't know what the root cause is until/if it becomes reproducible. It could be a hardware issue, or not. Really no way to tell at this point from a single occurence. One thing you could do is search the web and see if others are experiencing the same symptoms, on the off chance it's a known issue; perhaps the root cause is known. |

It could even have been as simple as a single bit of dust or fluff that got into the inside of your camera and gummed something up... one of those mystery glitches that gets ya once, but never shows up again...
Might be worth taking a moment to do a sensor clean face down with a rocket blower... Carefully of course... |

i had that happen once about 15 years ago with a canon AE-1 program. I think it was dirt. I wiggled the mirror back and forth a little bit to loosen up the hinge and it has worked fine ever since.
