Photographer's Gallery in Cherry Creek has announced its 8th annual Summer juried competition. No theme other than the show's title, "More Than Meets the Eye". Follow the link for submission details.

I don't think I have ever seen, in writing or in photography, any formal contest that didn't have an entry fee. Smaller galleries will often use proceeds to fundraise since prime real estate isn't cheap, and often they have to pay the juror as well. Hell, you pay $25/year to submit to member challenges here, which is essentially an entry fee if you don't give a damn about portfolio space. ;)

I am in one freebie contest right now, but it's pretty informal and very very limited as to who can participate. That's definitely more the exception than the rule.

I think that that is a fair fee. If your stuff is good enough, I am sure that 1 sale would more than cover it. I think it detours people like me that wouldn't have anything good enough to submit from submitting and wasting thier time in deciding to accept it or not. Those with great images are able to show and sell thier photos and probably come out ahead.

oh i definitely see the idea of "coming out ahead". And it is really not about the money. I just think, how about if you are juried and then get placed or get you work displayed then you pay. Your work isn't displayed unless the it is juried to a placement correct? I have never done it before...

I think if they did it that way they would get flooded with participants who have shot pictures of thier dog or new baby, and they would not be able to focus on serious entries.

Cutter-
In 2004, I entered a gallery's juried exhibition. This is how it worked:
1) Everyone brings in their entried and paid the entry fee. Members of the gallery get a reduced entry fee
2) They judged all the entries, and called everyone that was selected for the exhibition. I want to say only about half of the entries were selected. I don't remember for sure.
3) The gallery displayed all the artwork on their walls (or stands). They had an opening reception for the show. At that reception they announced the winners.
4) The collection stayed on display for a couple months.

The picture called, 'Beautiful' in my portfolio is the one that was selected for the show, but did not win anything. It was open to all medias so everything from photography to sculpture was there.

Hope that helps. Not sure if that is exactly what the Cherry Creek gallery is doing :)

Your stuff kicks so many kinds of butt that you should enter it, because you would do well. I think your money $25-35 is safe.

boomtap is right - your stuff is definitely excellent enough to impress PG. If I can win a ribbon on a 2mp vacation snapshot, then yours should be cake ;) Not everyone gets in, but I don't see how you can go wrong. I flinch a bit at the 50% commission, to be honest, but it just means I double my asking price. Overall, they are a really nice group of typically casual Coloradoans who really know their stuff.

By the way, I'm putting in the peacock, the ice bubbles, and the desert sideview mirror shot.
