Maybe you should ask a different question-is there any free photo editing software available that other people have used and would recommend?

You should be able to pick up Elements 2.0 for under $20 on ebay. Picasa is also a good free program online.

Hotshoe7, are you using a mac? If not why don't you try the GIMP, it's a full featured photo editing program that's free.

Here's acouple of links to get you going:

GIMP Users Group

download GIMP for Windows here

GIMP Users Manual

GIMP Plug-ins

UFRaw - the RAW Converter for GIMP

for simple edits I agree with timfytoo, picassa is a good program for that. I've been pleasantly surprised by it at times.

Hi everyone,

Thanks very much for all the useful hints and site links. I have looked at Picasa but it seems to be Windows-based. My computer is a Mac OS 9.2, so unfortunately it is limited in terms of supporting anything more than, from what I understand, a very basic photoediting program. scalvert suggested Photoshop Elements 1.0, so that is why I am looking for that in particular.

Thanks again for all your useful suggestions, they were not posted in vain ;-)

I'm actually quite surprised to see that the GIMP hasn't been ported to mac... wow... I thought that this would have happened ages ago... weird...

EDIT: looks like it's official... the GIMP only works for OS X and higher... bummer for you guys!

Can you upgrade to OS X?

I believe that PSE 2.0 will run under OS9. I know that when I install it on my G4, it always tells me that no "classic" environment (pre-OSX) is detected. Usually that means that a program will run under OS9.

Why not upgrade to OSX?

LOL....Very little $$$$!!!!!....but thanks anyway, if you want to send me some I will be glad to upgrade!!!!! ;-)

LOL, I'm such an ignoramus when it comes to Mac OS... I didn't even know that you had to pay to upgrade your OS... I thought that OS X was based on open source Linux...

I wasn't aware that they could charge for stuff that was developed on an open source code base...

I guess it's possible... Sucks for you though...

Actually, OSX is sitting on top of a BSD core, not Linux. Mac OS X is based on the Mach kernel and the BSD implementation of Unix. On top of this core, Apple designed and developed a number of proprietary closed source components, including the Aqua user interface and the Finder shell.

The permissive nature of the BSD license allows companies to distribute derived products as proprietary software without exposing source code.

I've been there. Still you should be able to get a PSE 2.0 disk for cheap. I used to have another one, but gave it away. My Dad may have upgraded from PSE 3.0 to the new 4.0. If he has, I'll see if I can get him to send me 3.0 then I'll send you my copy of 2.0 if you haven't found something already.

Photoshop Elements 1.0 is $7.99 at MegaMacs, which is why I mentioned it. If THAT'S out of the budget, then you're really down to Freeware, and there isn't much left for OS 9. Unfortunately, your camera model is one of the few that doesn't come with any Mac software. I probably have an old shrinkwrapped copy of Photoshop LE laying around somewhere- maybe an old version of OS X, too. I'll have to dig through the Scalvert Vault of Antiquities.

hi all

OK I caved, coughed up the dough for the PE 1.0 which scalvert pointed me to a few weeks back. Cost a lot more than $7.99 as shipping rates are exorbitant, but should be useful.

Thanks everyone for your advice
