I was shooting my daughters ballet show with an sb800 as a master to 2 sb600s (CLS) and about 2 hours into it my SB800 wouldn't come ready. I changed the batteries (several different pairs of fresh batteries) and everything seems to work great except it never comes ready and won't flash. No error codes or anything.

Anyone have similar issues or suggestions?

If you are using the 5th battery make sure that you are not using any of the lithium based batteries (everready e3)

The batteries on some units will overheat (caution they will burn you comming out of the strobe) causing some very strange symptoms.

I am using the 5th battery - but the are all 2700mA NiMH Duracells. Those suckers heat up too! I didn't burn myself but I didn't hold onto them too long either. This was actually a few weeks ago, I'm just getting around to solving the problem now. It still does the same thing though even though it's totally cool.

I'd try it without the 5th battery but unfortunately the door fell out of the bag at the show so now all I have is the 5th battery holder.

you may have 'cooked' it

they are robust but can die heat deaths, there are maximum frequ. of flashes & puting it into i-ttl will make that much shorter (due the pre flash information signals ..)
