Hey all. I tried to search the forums on this, but I couldn't find anything (plus I'm too lazy to go into every thread that mentions wireless!). Anyway, I have my Canon Rebel XT and 2 Alien Bees 400s. I use the sync cord, but I want to go wireless without using AB's wireless setup. I was hoping to get something that mounts directly to the hot shoe, instead of an external pack that connects to the hot shoe (I hope that made sense). I know people have discussed buying cheap setups on Ebay for $20 (or less). I don't need the absolute cheapest solution, but I would like to be under $100 if possible. I'm looking forward to using my strobes without the cable. Thanks in advance!

The Gold-standard of wireless receivers-transceivers are the Pocket Wizards. Expensive but reliable. |

Those look awesome, but probably overkill for my needs. Anything more in the range of my modest part-time photo biz? |

You have a photocell built in the flash unit. Ypu cam simply use it. To fire it without interference use your Canon Rebel XT buit in flash. Put a small make-up mirror in front of your camera flash to bounce the unit to a wall behind or at your side. This makes the light of your camera flash do not affect the image, but this light can be seen by the AB units. You need only one of the two flashs to be triggered this way, the second one probably will be triggered by the fisrt one.
I use this tech with my 2 external speedlights with sucess.

If your Abs can be fired via IR, paterson sells an IR tranmitter for the hotshoe for $40 at adorama. linky thingy
Paterson Stellar strobes see IR so it works with them. Not sure about ABs.
You can get for about $20-30 cheap radio ones on ebay. may work for you, may not. i found them unreliable, triggering the strobes at random times.

From what I can see on their site, they can't be fired via IR. Radio only (aside from a sync cord or another flash). |

That's what i thought. Back when i was shopping i recall the difference being mentioned but never looked that closely figuring i wouldn't be firing them that way.
I shoot weddings and PW or the quantum equivalent are the about teh only way to go. microsync is out there too, but PW is the standard. you can get some of the sekonic meters with a PW built in (i got a L358 that way) and you can buy norman lights with PW built in - others too i think.
I need to get one sender and 2 receivers for a late august wedding. $600ish. Ow. and I want a tokina 12-24...i am about ready to break the piggy bank for that one to take on vacation late July. $1000 total. Owee.
but then my buddy is going on vaca next week and bought this lens. He didn't want to take his 500 f4 on the plane to San Diego. So next trip to the zoo he says i can use his new lens!!!!!
it's only money, right?
