I'm new here and even newer to Photoshop etc. - is there a reference here that lists when editing I can do under Basic Editing rules? I have had a look but not found much more than crop, desaturate, USM. I'd hate to get DQ'd because I did a little too much but by the same token I'd like to be able to take advantage of the most I can!
PS: Why is it an unsharp mask when it makes the picture sharper? |

This is the Rules page.
Hope this helps.
And 'Unsharp Mask' is just a daft name i think, no idea why they called it that.

Basically, you can do anything that does not involve any filters (other than cleaning, sharpening and blurring), does not use a pixel layer (adjustment layers are ok), does not use any selection or masking tools of any sort and does not add text. Other than that you are fairly free to do anything at all -- just read the rules Ben linked to above.

USM gets its name from the darkroom technique it was inspired by. That technique was to create a blurry layer over the areas wanting to be sharpened (the unsharp mask) and then subtracting the fuzziness of this layer from the image below it. With the fuzziness gone, the image becomes more sharp.
The controls for USM control how the blurred the mask is(strength/amount), how wide the blur is (radius) and how much contrast is needed before any bluring occurs (threshold).
