Bad news for red rock landscape lovers...
A 3,000 acre wildfire is out-of-control west of downtown Sedona and threatening a couple subdivisions there off Solider Pass Road. For those unfamiliar with the area that is very close to downtown.
There is a mandatory evacuation of at least 400 homes and businesses. Highway 89 and all of Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona nearly to Flagstaff is closed.
The pictures in this gallery of "The Devil's Bridge" may be inside the fire zone and most of the images at the bottom of the gallery were taken last weekend in Oak Creek Canyon on a photo safari with Louddog.

Wildfire season is in full swing in Arizona. :(

That IS bad news indeed. Here in NM we are in a very serious fire danger situation as well, with approx. 10% of our normal 2.5" of precip so far this year. We have had several fires already in the bosque - where I shot
Luck has been with us so far, and they have all been contained before major damage to homes, and more importantly, IMO, the bosque itself. This is going to be one aweful season if we don't get significant moisture.
Best wished to Sedonia. |

Seems early news reports of the Brins fire near Sedona were exaggerated. It has been since "downsized" to 1,000 acres but still not controlled. It is burning ponderosa pine forest and about a mile from Oak Creek Canyon homes. It is burning southwest to northeast just north of Sedona itself.
Winds are calm now but the fire is still described as "very active". Winds are expected to increase to 15-26 by mid-afternoon and humidity expected drop from 40% to about 8%.
Arizona and all the western USA have suffered a lot of huge wildfires over the last 5 years, some well above 100,000 acres, and it appears there is no relief in sight.
