I've been participating quite actively in the TrekEarth website. One thing I noticed there that would surely be useful here is the ease of uploading pictures - the EXIF data for each picture is automatically extracted and the values get plugged in neatly for you. I'd certainly appreciate that functionality on this site too!

Question: How do you maintain the EXIF data on a post processed shot?

You need software that is aware of the EXIF information. If it is older software, the EXIF info tends to get stripped off.
I don't have a list of comatible programs, however most of the new releases of the most popular software should deal with EXIF just fine.
WIth respect to Photoshop, I know that you can lose the informatoin if you do a major edit, such as layering (combining) two images. Which EXIF information would be retained? The software retains none, and this is the correct choice.
I'm not aware of any DPC-egal edits that would result in the loss of the EXIF info in Photoshop.

On the original it's not a problem. When I save a copy I no longer have the EXIF. My canon software can read the EXIF on the original just fine.
Since most of us upload a post processed image and not the original, would the EXIF data actually be maintained to be captured by the suggested feature?

All the pics I've uploaded into Trekearth were Photoshop-processed. The EXIF were all preserved. My workflow is this: original foto-> Photoshop edit-> save an edit for DPC and/or Trek-> upload. Trek gets the EXIF automatically. I know that there are people who are uploading images that have no EXIFs (e.g. scanned fotos), but Trek allows you to manually plug the values too. They really have a good picture upload mechanism working there.

Actually, I misspoke earlier. Lots of folks including myself, use Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature, and as it turns out, this strips off EXIF information.
If the software doesn't mess with it, it will be there to be interpreted. And if its not there, manual entry is always an alternative.
