Looking at at LaCie drive today and I don't know what firewire is, although I've heard it tossed around a few times.

Is this something I could hook a card reader thru or something? (I don't have one right now but it's looking pretty good too!)

Its an interface like USB, also sometimes called a 1394 interface.

Lots of current computers have both types, you can check your computer easy enough just look for the port, it will probably be labeled as such and will be much smaller than the USB one.

It has some advantages over USB in that its less a resource hog (doesn't slow your system down as much) and can be faster with many devices.

Forgot to mention, alot of external drives now will feature both interfaces so you can use them with either type.

LaCie drives are very good -- I bought one for work a couple of days ago. Most of them now come with USB II, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 connections; the last of these is the fastest by quite a bit.

FireWire comes built-in on Macs and can be added with an inexpensive card to almost all PCs which don't have it already; I think for about $30 you can get a card with both FireWire and USB ports on it.
