Dumb question from a dumb person
A few people have asked me for prints of horses. I have one or two horse shots taken at various fairs, but not many. I want to ask a friend if she'll let me photograph her horses doing horse things and (hopefully) getting a couple of prints available from that.
My thought was to offer her prints in exchange for horsetime, does this seem adequate? What do others do in this situation? These are not professional horse-models.
And - creatures like horses (or dogs or chickens) at fairs, in parks, etc - are they fair game? Do I need a horse-model release?
Feel free to point me to the thread I missed regarding this - or just tell me where I can go. :)
Thanks! |

If they are a famous horse, then definately get their hoof print on the dotted line! |

I grew up on a farm and did a lot of exhibiting of animals at county fairs and such. I would say that if you are planning on selling the pics, I would ask the owner about it. Especially horses...in my experience horse people can be a whole different kind of personality, and they are notorious for being difficult to work with at times. For many people their horses are not livestock, they are pets. Good luck! |

I don't see any reason why prints-for-time wouldn't work in this situation.
Also, I think a model release would be the way to go with horses for sure. Dogs and cats - prolly depends more on the owner's personality, but it couldn't hurt.

I'd suggest a rifle for shooting horses ;) |

Thanks ladies. For my friend prints for time sounds good. When I make a jillion dollars from the photos I would be moderately generous and give her a couple scheckels as well. I just wouldn't want to take advantage of anyone's animal ... that doesn't sound quite right. Anyway.
@konrad: I think I'll leave the firepower at home on the first shoot, it'll make the second one easier if the equine is mobile. ;)
*hands cindi a towel* - I can't take you anywhere! |

I give my friends a disk of the pictures I take of them and their horses for them to do with as they'd like. So far they have been happy with the results. |
