Hey, I see you're in Montreal, that's cool.
J'imagine que tu parles francais aussi?
Are you part of any photo club? From your self portrait, I have the impression that I've seen you before. |

Even though you feel stuck in that range, every challenge in the 5 range has been an improvement over the last. |

Even though you said not to, I looked through challenge entries as that's where the scores in question come from.
First glance you got a good eye for cool stuff (subject) bordering on the artsy (concept) side. As we lean towards the artsy side we cause the voters around here to actually engage the photo. Trust me, if they decide not to take in the shot then they won't and just click a 2, 3 or 4. Subject Matter is call we have to make around here, and sometimes we just can't win with what we want to portray.
On the technical side, watch your Lighting (portraits especially) harsh lighting will garner lower scores. I think in general a little more contrast to many of the shots and they would do better.
With the 20D one thing I would learn right off (I didn't until way later) is exposure compensation. Use exposure comp on the minus side to underexpose and add a bit of feel to the shots.
By the way with the 20D what parameter are you shooting with? By default parm 1 preset 1 is dull and flat across the board. Play around with the custom Parm, back off the contrast, kick up the sharpen and experiment with the tonal setting to get a feel that you like.
Your headed in the right direction just lacking a bit of pop...
This of course is just my opinion...
