I just went over my Rebel's sensor probably around 12 times with a swab, and it's ALMOST all clean! This was about 4 months of dust buildup from traveling in some pretty polluted/dusty conditions. I've also finally gotten over the last bit of sensor cleaning fear, having pressed pretty hard a couple of times with the spatula/pec pad without any damage although I did get a little bit anxious after swipe 1 ;)

I found that when my D70 was that dirty, I had to do it more than that. I finally resorted to using canned air, couple of good shots with the camera held straight up, stop when the can gets cold, let the shutter down, spray out the entire chamber, wipe the sides out with a pec pad a couple of time. spray the chamber again. open the shutter again, spray it again straight up, two quick but full shots. then I'd go and clean the sensor directly again a couple of times, and it was finally clean.

It's not just the sensor that gets dirty, it's your camera too.

I took a hand blower and brush to the sensor/mirror/box before I did the swiping, so I'm hoping that does the trick at least until I go and do something to make it that dirty again.
