...so my friend picked up her Tamron 70-300 F4-5.6 for the first time in about a year, to find that the zoom ring is completely stuck at 300mm. We pryed at it for a few minutes and managed to get the ring to move a tiny bit, but the glass inside still refuses to move from the 300mm position. When we move the lens around we can definitely hear something is loose in there.

We started joking that if we can't get it fixed then it will be her new 300mm Prime :D
Anyone have any ideas?

well, factory service comes to mind, or you could undo all those screw thingies, but then you'd most definitely need factory service. ;-)

have you tried slamming it against a table or other hard surface? If not, I would advise against it. Had the same problem with a nikon lens gave it a good wack and instantly voided the warranty. on that note i just picked up a new Tamron AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical IF. today to become my new general purpose lens. I am very pleased with the first shots I took this afternoon.

If it's out of warranty factory service may cost more than the lens is worth. Try a google search on "lens repair". You'll find camera shops that are willing to tackle the job for less, maybe even one nearby.

hmm ok thanks. Is there anything I can try by myself to remedy this?

You could try putting it on a camera and making it focus. Running the focus motor might just loosen something inside that has it stuck. But if it has a rattle inside, as you say, it will probably need to be opened by a pro. Unless, of course, you really wanted a 300mm prime all along, LOL.
