I have been playing with Neat Image and am just wondering if these are too neat so to speak...any opinions?

Before... After...

Before After...

Before After...

Before After...

And a few others...

After seeing comments about "plastic" just want to be sure that they are not over smoothed.

Thanks so much!

Personally I think these are just fine. You used just enough to take out the grain w/out leaving it looking "plastic."

It is a little hard to tell with web graphics but they look pretty good to me. Seems like you are giving the images about the right amount.

Properly applied for its intended purpose the only noticeable difference you should see is less noise in an image after NI is applied. If you look at your picture from about 200%-400% full size both before and after NI it makes it easier to see if you are overdoing it.

Noise reduction is always a balancing act between artifact removal and loss of detail. The trick is to strike a proper balance between the two.

I'd say they are pretty good. The first one is borderline, any more NI would be too much. :)

The 1st and 4th seem a little overdone to me, loses some of the people's character. The other ones look really good.

I think the 1st and 4th went overboard.. the other 2 are acceptible. NI is really easy to overdo in portraits. Even just a little too much makes it look like a protrait of a maniquin.

FWIW, there are more effective ways to deal with noise in portraits, such as diffusion or glam filters in photoshop.

Thanks everyone! This is the first time I have used Neat Image, so I am still messing around with it. I hadn't thought of the glam action I have of the diffusion.....Now I have something new to try! Thanks so much for the comments!!
