I am in the dreaming stage of a trip to Zambia.
Anybody been there?
What are things I should think about in planning a trip there? |

I will be going to visit friends at a mission. I'm thinking about renting a car and doing some touring with photography as a goal. We are usually do it yourselfers in our travel. So I'm trying to get ideas on how best to get the most out of the trip without resorting to a paid safari or tour. I'm thinking we will be in the area for a month. So I'm sure we will get to Victoria Falls and the Chobe refuge.
But I'm hoping to get info on logistics of getting around - and safety issues I might not think about. Also stories about rental cars, camping, lodging (when not with our friends), etc.
Looking forward to your pm.

Did a more or less organized tour through Southern Africa and passed Zambia too. I suggest taking a brief detour to Zimbabwe if you decide to shoot the Vic Falls. Much better view there. When you do travel to Zimbabwe, remember to be *very* careful trading your money on the black market (which you *should* do btw, you get 10 times as much) and be wary of police when you do. *Never* trade on the street, but most Tourist Bureaus will happily take you to a shop around the corner where you can get your money. Never do this alone though. One day visa across the border is about 30 dollars. Make sure you get back on time though, border closes quite early. And while you're on the bridge, take the plunge. |

i would highly recommend staying at a bushcamp that you can arrange thru Mfuwe lodge in south luangua, also Freya is a wonderful guide if you want a day or 2 of walking safaris in the south luangua (dont recommmend walking in the bush without qualified guides)
What month will you be there?
Will send you a PM with Freya's email ( sometimes slow to respond due to living in bush most of time) |

Mary Ann, one of the sites I spend lots of time on is the Africa travel talk section of the Fodors website. You'll get SOOOO much fantastic feedback if you post some questions there and many of the posters are really into photography so you can ask about that aspect too.
If you let them know rough budget, time of year and duration you'll get masses of info.
The website address is:

Thanks everyone for the information. I am looking forward to exploring the Fodor's site.
I don't know yet which month - this trip is still in the "dreaming" stage. One website I looked at mentioned November December as being good months to go.
But since I think this trip is closer to becoming a reality - I'm trying to do my research now. And I do want to visit my friends while they are living there.
Plus, you have to dream about something, before it can become a reality. So I'm dreaming and plannning in hopes that I can make it happen sometime in the next 12 months. |

Well come on over to Fodors - you're welcome to say in your opening post there, if you wish, that I suggested you come by and ask for some input.
If you can provide rough idea of budget the ideas will be more suited to you but you can just ask for general input first too!
