I am not so experienced with editing photographs, so from recently I have started using Googles Picasa, which is quite good at many things, fast and simple to use. But what if I wanted to "upgrade", for instance would I like a noise reduction feature for high ISO shots.

I have seen PS CS2 in action, it seems very capable but maybe too advanced for me at this stage? I find many tings in there I cannot understand (yet!).

Thank you for your advice ...

I don't know anything about Picasa add-ons but you might be interested in Photoshop Elements. It's a lighter version of Photoshop that still has plenty of features but isn't quite as overwhelming as the full blown software.

For noise reduction, check out Neat Image. There's a free download which is a stand alone application.

I would definitely recommend that you move into Photoshop at some stage. You don't have to buy the full-featured PSCS2, you could opt for the much more affordable "Elements" package.

My vote: skip the Elements and get to learn CS2. Yes, the learning curve is rather steep, but you can do soooooo much with it, it's almost a necessity. Invest in some books and/or videos for Photoshop, because with Elements I feel that you run into limitations sooner than you think.

For only 6 times the price too!! We went from free, to $600+ awesome.

The only plugin I know of is the Simpleviewer web page export plugin.

The OP didn't mention anything about a price limit. I just gave my opinion on the better upgrade. And if money is an issue, there are several ways around it. One legal way is to buy second hand or a student version.

Edit: it appeared the OP asked for PICASA add-ons, not upgrade. Ignore my remark, although I still feel that you almost have to have Photoshop.

Yeah, in the end, everyone goes SLR and full photoshop, just start saving if you don't have the money.

You can get PS Elements 4 for free from 1and1.com if you sign up for their $9.99/month hosting plan. Plus Adobe GoLive! and some other software, GIF editor and FTP client I think.

Amazon has it for $60 after rebate right now. I feel like I saw a cheaper offer recently but I can't think where.

Geee! What quick replies! Thank you to everyone ... I could not find a similar question here, yet I feared the "it has been covered many times before" answer ...

Let me be more specific - when I wrote "add-ons" I actually meant extra programs, like Neat Image which is suggested above. My fault at using a wrong word! But regarding PS CS2 ... another issue than the cost is that it feels quite heavy to work with, loading time, etc. I thought maybe there would be something in-between, or better alternates than PS.

BUT, it seems like PS is the reference here though, so I would probably go that way as well ... just like I skipped OS/2 for Windoze - just to make life easier and use what everyone else is using ... Next notebook might be an Apple, btw, THAT is a completely new discussion though!

Thank you again ...
