When will it be released, and is it worth waiting for?
I would like the 350D, but I know that the moment I buy it Canon releases the 400D (or whatever the name will be of the successor). In any case, the day they do so the prices of the 350D should drop so I might get a 350D anyway ...
Someone with inside info?

The 350D is still pretty competitve. You may be waiting a while. |

Nobody has that inside info. The past PMA was proof of that. The rumours onteh 20D succesor were wrong across the board - features, name, price...
Photokina is the next big show where products are released, it's this fall.
rumours:
5D update. Canon always puts rebates on cameras to clear out inventory before thy release a new one - and the 5D has a rebate on it. No clue on what the updgrade would be,but probably minor like the 30D was.
the 350 is due for an update. Canon generally runs 18 months on their bodies...no idea on what's up.
3000D - a low end 6Mp dSLR. Canon invented the low end dSLR segment and has abandoned it to the D50 and now all the other makers have cameras lower priced than the 350. Rumour was a non-RAW model for $500.
1Dmk2n - some canon official said the 1.3 crop sensor is more or less dead, so this may be dropped - perhaps a weather sealed body with 10 or 12 FPS and the 5D sensor in 1D case?

One poster on DPReview has said to look for more than one DSLR announcement from Canon this Fall. He's been right in the past, so what he says may be the result of inside knowledge.
I'd certainly expect something new in the 1-series. Speculation in the rest of the lineup is anybody's guess. |

I was disappointed in the lack of real features differences between the 20D and the 30D. There's no solid motivation for me to upgrade. I pretty much need a 20-25% increase in resolution to upgrade.
A 10+ MP sensor to compete with the Nikon D200 would be nice. |

I reads like it'll replace the 350D, but with a higher spec than the current 30D? That makes it sound like there's gonna be 2 cameras announced (350->400D, 30->40D?), or a reshuffle of the range...

*drools over the 50/1.2L* I'm not sure why they're adding IS to the 70-200/4, but I guess that way it'll compliment the 24-105/4 IS.

The difference between 8 and 10 mpix is almost nil. The Canon 8mpix cameras compete quite well.

I'm right with you there Matt! L build qaulity, weather sealed, ring USM, circular aperture... that thing's gonna rock. The real question in my mind is whether it will pass the astrophotography test? Methinks I'm going to have to figure out a way to find out! |

ultrasonic dust removal
This is the key feature I've been waiting to see Canon implement on their new line. To me, this feature should have been on the 30D.
I would have bought one had it been.
They should now immediatley dump the 30D and go with the 30D+ (which should simply include the ultrasonic dust removal).

Canon is due to release a 1 series, and a new entry level camera. Could be the 370/400 etc that everyone is talking about.
But I just read Canon's white paper on full frame sensors and it got me to wondering why everyone thinks Canon's entry level will have an APS-C sensor? Seems that sensor size exponentially affects the sensor price. Canon may be able to cut significant cost by going to a smaller sensor, like 2.0 crop factor (as in the 4/3s system) or even taking a P&S 10 or 12 MP sensor and puting it in a body with an EF/EF-S mount on the front. This may get the cost of a "DSLR" down to a few hundred dollars, perhaps under $400 with the entry level lens (the "3000D" has been rumored.) This also means that the sales of the 30D are not greatly affected.
Doing this would allow Canon to sell a big MP number to the masses, who then find out that the low-light performance is poor, so they buy a 50 f/1.8, or some f/2.8 zoom, and a big flash. Then when the go to buy a new camera, they are locked into Canon's system. If they want another camera for the spouse, kids, etc, they buy the same brand so as to share lenses. And its a factor for thier friends and relatives, who will share lenses, etc with each other.
Some have said that the top of the line camera affects sales--it may, but only to those who know about cameras. The P&S crowd is starting to buy DSLRs, and seem to buy based only, or mostly, on the MP number. (I can see the adds now-- Canon $399, 12MP, builtin 2.4x lens multiplier vs Nikon with a 10MP sensor and only 1.5x lens multiplier :-)

You got this....
//www.northlight-images.co.uk/cz-x/index.html X - and a countdown
and this...
//www.patyuen.com/digital/400dleak.htm that ends with Update: As of August 23, 2006, a store in the Netherland has started advertising the 400D. This is by no means a confirmation as they are not listing any pricing or taking orders.
So.....we'll know more in the morning. |

It would of been nice if they would of made the body a little bigger than the 350XT.
350xt - 127 x 94 x 64 mm / 19oz.
400xt - 126.5 x 94.2 x 65 mm / 18oz.
almost the same. |

This really closes up on the 20D: the same autofocus mechanism is a big point, as I really don't like the 350D/XT focus points.
I hope that there are some price cuts on other models coming soon...

Looking at the US sites the price seems to be significantly lower than the Nikon D80 and near that of the Sony Alpha 100, although probably pitched against the Sony more than the D80.
Isn't photography fun? |

I just wonder how much this will drop the prices of the other cameras already out. Might end up being a good time for a backup body. Although the Rebel feels more like a kids toy then a camera compared to the others. It might just be worth tossing one in the bag as its not a slouch for a camera in its own right.
