I am thinking about purchasing a wide angle lens w/ adapter for my camera on ebay. I really don't know much about them but I am considering a 0.45 X or a 0.50 X.

Does anyone know which is better and is there much difference?

You multiply them. For your camera, the Z1 starts at the widest of 38mm.
So if you put a 0.5x wide converter on, it would be:
38mm x 0.5 = 19mm wide.
If you got the 0.45x instead, it would be:
38mm x 0.45 = 17.1mm wide.

which is better? Of course the 0.45x, since it will give you a wider angle than the 0.5x (see calculations above). But I'm assuming both are from the same manufacturer, since not all brands are created equal.

EDIT: typo

I have a raynox .66x myself. Very satisfied even tho it's a bit soft in the corners.

If you're talking about the brands like "Crystal Optics,", "Titanium Optics," and similar, don't expect great performance. You'll almost definitely see more chromatic abberation, softness in the corners, and increased flare. If there is one made by your camera manufacturer, it will almost certainly be better, but will of course cost significantly more.
I'd suggest buying where you have the opportunity to try it out and see the results.
