I couldn't dig up too much info on this lens. How does it compare to the non AF-S version? Share whatever you know about this lens, thanks.

The AF-S is super fast and a fantastic lens. I own one. I opted for this over the 80-200 AF because of he silent wave motor and the fact that it has been the defacto standard for Photo Journalism.

It produces the most fantastic bokeh (SO glad for the Bokeh challenge) and the images are tack sharp even at 2.8. I use it allot for portraits as well.

The only lens I would replace my 80-200 AF-S with is the 70-200 VR.

P.S. Mine is Black not white.

70-200mm 2.8

Give this lens a look if a few extra dollars isn't a problem. It's becoming legendary.

I'm very pleased with my 80-200 AF-D. From what I've read they are nearly identicle with regard to optics, but the AF-S version focuses lightning fast and weighs a little more too I think. My AF-D focuses exceptionally fast too though, so the AF-S must really scream! It really is an awesome lens! You'll be happy with it.

The 80-200 AF-S is a truly awesome lens. Having the VR on the 70-200 might be a nice bonus but that's really all it has over the older lens. The 80-200 AF-S also works very well with the Nikon AF-S or AF-I teleconverters even wide open, making it even more versatile. If you get one you won't regret it.

I went to Yellowstone this last week, and I learned eaclty why people get 1000mm lenses. I was using an 80-400vr that I borrowed to shoot an Osprey nest, and I could barly see it when I got home even. Had an awsome moment with one parent flying up with a fish in claws, wings spread wide, and I just couldn't get close enough. :-(
