What is the difference between broken and bokeh? Or did they misspell it? If so then it should be broken III

Generally for bokeh to contribute to the feel of the photo its got to be well lit - so you get nice little balls of light in the background (or forground) But thats just what appeals to me.

Yay! Finally a chance to redeem myself for my third lowest score since joining DPC, I got to redeeom myself in comp colors the other day, went from 5.3 to a 7.2 so now it´s "Bokeh" time :) Wish me luck!

Thanks for letting us all know what your entry is going to be. We'll be sure to give it nothing but 10s.

man...now we do a bokeh challenge. The first challenge I entered would have been an great bokeh shot...but it did horrible in the challenge it was in.

think bokeh is explained well...

...those tornado pics are pretty cool Crayon...

Where? I wanna see...I wanna see.

Some prior conversation/thoughts on bokeh examples and what the definition is.

man, talk about being off topics, lol. here you go.

Yeah, sorry bout that off-topic bit, I just really love seeing stormy photos. And TY. Very, very cool. A bit closer than I could imagine myself, but cool nonetheless.

...As for the Bokeh challenge. Not that hard...just take a picture with something in focus, and leave the aperature open. Now making it interesting, and good, well the first step to do that would be...Dont take advice from me! LOL.

This challenge and its wording again is sure to generate as lively a discussion about what bokeh is as it did the first time around.

Bokeh does not simply mean any shallow focused image.

To most professional photographers bokeh is a lense aberration generated by the way it renders out-of-focus POINTS of light. They are usually circular or oval, sometimes have dark centers and ocassionally take on the shape of the lense aperture at the time of the exposure. Bokeh is purely an effect of the lense you are using. Different lenses, depending on their coatings and corrections for chromatic and spherical abberations will produce varying degrees of bokeh.

And, yes, the blue ribbon winner in the first bokeh challenge is not the best example of bokeh because it lacks out-of-focus point light sources. The red ribbon winner is an excellent example of bokeh.

Good luck everyone. :)

I forsee a lot of DNMC's given out in this challenge. I'm pretty sure if I enter it, I'll get a lot of DNMC's. Can we be nice to people in this challenge (mainly to me)?
06/14/2006 11:40:34 AM · #43
If I may just point out, a shallow DOF doesn't necessarily make the photo on topic for the Bokeh challenge

//www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_results.php?CHALLENGE_ID=423

I can pick some photos out from that challenge that may work nicely in this one though...

The first one here 100% perfectly on topic for the Bokeh challenge, the other two below, I think are good too though?

Do yourselves all a big favor and cut the submitters some slack. Chances are good you are going to get a set of mostly shallow focused images anyway. If you compare the bokeh challenge with the shallow DOF challenges you will find a lot of similarity.

Where's the circles, the points of light, etc...? To me those display a blurred background, not bokeh.

I think this one is a good example (not the only one) from what's been posted:

Bokeh
"A term derived from the Japanese word for "fool" which when applied to a lens refers to the pleasing quality of the out of focus areas of an image produced by the lens. Thought to be related to factors like the shape of the aperture opening and spherical aberration."

Bokeh
"(from the Japanese boke ‚ڂ¯, "blur"[1]) is a photographic term describing the subjective aesthetic qualities of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens. For example, causing an out-of-focus background image may reduce distractions and emphasize the primary subject.

Although difficult to quantify, and hence open to debate, some lenses are believed to enhance overall image quality by producing more subjectively pleasing out-of-focus areas (bokeh).

Bokeh characteristics may be quantified by examining the image's circle of confusion. In out-of-focus areas, each point of light becomes a disc. In images taken by some lenses, that disc is uniformly illuminated, for others it is brighter near the edge, and for others it is brighter near the center. Some lenses show one kind of disc for out-of-focus points closer to the camera, and a different kind for points farther from the camera. Traditionally speaking, an out-of-focus point of light with a more illuminated center and a dimmer outer edge is considered to be more desirable than an evenly illuminated disc or one with brighter edges than center. A circle of confusion with darker edges has a less defined shape which allows it to blend with the surrounding image. A hard edge would tend to bring the eye away from the in-focus subject and toward the out-of-focus element."
