OK, time to be ruthlessly honest now kids.

This is my entry for Seasonal Shots. It's the lawnmower picture that I tilted at an angle (and yes, that is my chunky calf muscle too).

Did I screw myself with the tilting? I was trying to do something different so I fully expected some of the comments I got, but I was surprised at the negative reaction. This is a technique that's often done in coffee table-style books so I thought it was worth a shot here.

The part I was most disappointed about was the 1px black border. I think this would have been more effective if there weren't a square around it to show how off-kilter the photo was.

Anyway, please lemme hear your thoughts.

Rob

The tilting was intentional and doesn't hurt the shot IMO. What I find kind of funny is there is no evidence that you have cut any grass. So you don't like to mow but just push the mower around pretending? Do you make the sound of the motor too. :<)

I gave it an 8... I liked it, and thought the tilting was effective. IMO, you deserved a better placing!

It was the one time this summer I cut the grass before it got about 6 inches high. :( Unfortunately, it was the night BEFORE I decided to take this shot.

I would have looked silly asking my neighbor if I could take a picture of myself mowing their grass. :)

I think the frame was a good move it sets off the tilt, and makes it work for me.

I rated it highly and like the tilt. This one really stood out of the masses, to me. The composition and subject really do it. Even in b&w. I thought at first I'd like to see it in color, but it's so good I decided it didn't matter either way! The outside border throws it off, though. Was that yours or the site's?

I thought the tilt was good and gave it a seven. My scale may still be a little off as I tend to give just a few nines and almost no tens.

I think this pic could have benefited from the remove all colors except green and yellow trick in photoshop. Would have looked really cool and artistic then. The tilt is not bad I kinda like it.

the site automatically adds a 1px border around every image submitted. i didn't really know that until i submitted this one. DANG! oh well.

i had a comment from a friend here that it might have been more effective if the camera itself had been tilted and then the picture submitted in the traditional horizontal manner. maybe that's true...

I'd agree with that, tilt your camera when shooting, rather than tilting the shot in post processing. I liked the shot a lot, though I thought it could have used a tiny bit of a contrast boost or something...I think maybe just a bit more texture/detail on the grass! (don't you love the nitpicks? ;))

I think it needs either more or less tilt.

I thought the tilting made it stand out from the rest as a creative shot. It should have ranked higher.

The tilt actually made me give it a high score for creativity.

Tilt is in.

I had to turn in a college paper in late 1970/early 1971 -- I had a portable typewriter with an extra-wide carriage, so I was able to type one of the pages at an angle of 10 or 15 degrees (to emphasize that I was expressing my own slanted opinion, I guess).

hmmm...well maybe it just didn't do so well 'cause the picture sucked. LOL

all this time I thought "well, at least I have a reason...." phooey!

i wonder how many tilted photos we'll see in the coming challenges. i'm proud to have spearheaded the effort (although judging from my Monuments shot, which is also angled slightly, we have a ways to go before angled shots are not second-class photographs)...

Thanks for the kudos kids!
