Arnold Newman
Arnold Newman, the master of environmental portraiture, died from a heart attack in a New York hospital yesterday, 6 June, 2006, aged 88.
Born in New York City in 1918, he grew up in New Jersey and Florida, leaving his art studies at Miami University to become an apprentice to a photographer when he ran out of money. Starting his own work as a documentary photographer, he developed his style of portraiture from the work of photographers such as Walker Evans, who posed people in their own homes or on shop fronts to take their pictures.

Indeed a legend. His portraits of Igor Stravinsky, Marilyn Monroe, and Arthur Miller are what all other environmental portraits are judged by.
Igor Stravinsky at the piano is one of my all time favorite photos.
Thanks for the news, albeit very sad. |

I'll have to look for that one -- he's one of my favorite composers. |

Truly a sad day, but what an inspiration! The images he's left all of us should be cherished.

You can view two portraits of Stravinsky here ...including the one by Newman. |
