I took several pics of some owls up in the trees around my house, I was pointed up into the sky so you could see bright light coming in between the leaves. And I notice that around many of those bright area's is an annoying purple glowing haze like effect. I have three questions, what causes it, what can you do to prevent it from happening while shooting, and finally, can it be fixed (ie removed) post processing?

Purple fringing happens when you have some high contrast lighting. Some lenses have a coating on it that helps to tone down the effect.

It's called Chromatic Aberration, and here is a pretty good description of it:

it's the one thing i don't like about the canon 50 1.8.
