I'll throw in my $0.02, as I have a 51" Toshiba rear-projection unit. If you get the tv and never see an HD picture on it then you'll probably be happy with the purchase. Just like your current tv, cable/satellite will just be tv, and DVDs will be of better quality (although the difference in quality on the 60" will be much more dramatic). However, once you get a good HD feed pumping through the set, you'll find yourself watching nature shows about dung beetles over standard cable/sat programming. I personally have become very spoiled and grumble not only when something isn't aired in HD (sometimes the networks air re-runs in standard def), but also when a bad HD feed comes in. As mentioned in a previous post, some feeds are better than others, and you'll end up becoming a snob like the rest of us.

You won't regret the extra couple of bucks for the HD channels. Shop around though, as I found that Comcast in my area has a much better deal than the satellite providers (HD is free if you have a digital package w/ 1 premium...w/out a premium I was paying $5 extra).

You're going to love the purchase though...my only regret has been buying a RPTV vs a DLP/LCD/Plasma. My set it HUGE, but at the time it was all I could really afford, and I wanted the 51" screen. If i had to do it again I'd be more concerned w/ viewing angles and overall size of the box.

Anyone want to buy a lightly used 51" RPTV to help me fund some newer techology? hehe...

Once you view on HD, you get spoiled. It's been great to view the World Cup matches on HD, as long as it is showing on a HD cable channel. Eventually more and more stations will be swtiching so it's worth it now, unless you want to wait a while because the prices may drop over time. We had to buy extra service (thru Comcast) when we got ours but it is only $5 more.

The colours are more vivid, and pictures much sharper. Have you seen the Discovery Channel? It makes you feel you are right there at the location it is being filmed.

You need to sit back far enough to be able to appreciate it. It's a bit much if you are only going to sit about 4 feet away from it.

Ditch the TV. Buy a bicycle instead and RIDE!

Better for you. Better for your family. Better for the environment and most of all... Better for your MIND!

I guess eventually more will hit the area but what do I expect in little ole Georgetown, KY.

Get an XBox 360 (plays HD games and acts as a Media Center Extender) and a Media Center PC (Vista will do the same thing) and start streaming HD off the internet to your big screen... There is some really cool stuff available... :)

Yes certainly worth the cost.

100% worth it. Don't listen to everyone else. They don't know what they are missing. We don't watch a lot of TV, but when we do it's absolutely stunning. Our favorites are Discovery HD Theater, our local PBS channel in HD (KCET), and HBO.

But don't buy an HD plasma if you're not going to get the HD channels. My Samsung 42" plasma is absolutely amazing in HD, but a lot of the regular channels from Adelphia here in LA look absolutely terrible.... like Fox Sports West or Prime Ticket or whatever they want to call it. The quality of the signal is atrocious and the plasma TV seems to make it even worse. I can't believe in a city as big as Los Angeles, the Dodgers are not broadcast in HD.

Good advice. I've heard that big screens can actually make the "normal" channels look worse...is that really true? If that's the case, MOST of the channels will be terrible! Again, is it really worth only have a few channels that look good at all!??

Not exactly true. I have a 51" Toshiba RPTV, and a HDTV is the only way to use a progressive scan DVD player.

Not all regular cable channels are terrible. It will depend on your provider. In my case, Fox West 2 on Adelphia just sucks. But it's true that the non-HD channels will not look better just because you have an HDTV. You'll just have a bigger screen. And if you're sitting too close to the tv it won't look too good. But didn't your mom tell you not to do that or your eyes would go crooked???

One other thing to keep in mind is NBC, ABC, Fox, and CBS all broadcast a good chunk of their prime time shows and sports in HD. Also, if you're a sports fan, you'll LOVE watching Sportscenter and Baseball Tonight in HD. So you should check out your cable company's website and find out what channels they offer. Adelphia has two groups of HD channels that you can buy. One is the local channels (networks) and the other is full of the extra ones.

But keep in mind that the price of plasma is coming down too. Don't rush into it.... think about it and research it for a few more months and you'll probably save $100 or so.
