I think you guys have got it. i guess great minds think alike. lol. I remember them walking by without stopping so the fact that dog was sitting seems odd but i never saw the bird either so what do i know? Trying to keep a husband, toddler, preschooler and teenage step son in sight while taking pictures can be distracting. thanks for taking the time out to really study it. id have hated to not get a real answer since i was wondering if there could have been a problem with my camera and sicne its less than two months old I would have been heartbroken. |

This might be a good place to ask the obvious question: "What's a jaded youth doing with a husband and kids, anyway?" jejejeâ¢

The sharp line is not the dog! The sharp line is the leg of the woman behind.
You will notice that the sun is high, but not directly above. It is just off to her right and above. The left (her right) leg is in shadow. This creates the suggestion in our minds that her legs are grey or perhaps socked. In fact, it is shadow. The shadows has been extended because of the bag in her hand.
On the other hand, the right leg (her left) is raised in mid-stride. It has come out from directly underneath her and is now being lit by direct sunlight. If you look REALLY closely, you can see that her leg is VERY slightly lighter in color than the dog's fur. It is the line of her leg that creates the illusion of a sharp cutoff. The square of grass is therefore no illusion, just space between her calves (and the dog) where there is nothing blocking the view.

Here's my rendition of this explanation...I removed the lunch sack and interpreted the shadows....enhanced the dog for separation...I think eschelar hit the nail on the head:

LOL! I started using this as a user name for different things when i was 15. i WAS youthful then. maybe i should change it to jaded_fatass. lol j/k But I AM still 7 years younger than my husband and not old enough to be the actual mother of my teenage step son. so im not THAT old. right?!?! |

Oh crap, now I think I can see a face in the leg... maybe it's haunted after all!
heh j/k.
incidentally, the angle of the back of the dog makes me think that the dog is either in mid-sit or perhaps did one of those little 'sit-then-stand' change of mind things that some dogs do... Or maybe it's just getting excited at the bird...
That might explain why you didn't notice it sitting then... Could have only been in that pose for just a moment. |

The odd shape is indeed the optical conjunction of her leg and the dog's fur, but the dog's not sitting. The woman is in mid-stride. Note the position of her left leg, forward of her right. The dog, ears perked up and head turned, has actually noticed the bird and is looking at it, not at the photographer. |

That's only an excuse used by the terminally uninventive. I know that because someone told me.

It's common for a dog to drop its hind when it sees something it wants to chase. So, it probably dropped its rear right before you pressed the shutter release..

It was obviously a soul that you captured in a previous photograph. I used Adobe PhotoExorcist to banish it. Now you can see that the woman has both legs and the dog is intact.
(Pay no mind that the sidewalk is missing now.)

lol I lived in clearwater florida back when the virgin mary appeared on a bank window.lol. its still there. then when i worked in a mall when i was 18 a co worker told me a cinnamon roll i made looked like the virgin mary so if the virgin mary WAS in this photo I might have to rethink my whole life and go become a nun because it would seem shes following me. I dont see a face though thank gosh. |

Out "splurging" on an actual camera bag ... looks like you've gotten quite adequate technical advice anyway : )

What he's not telling you is that he was supposed to be shooting a golf tournament and the bird was just an accident. |
