Why is it that the photos that I think look really great do the poorest in the challenges and the ones that I think are crap do a whole lot better? For example, my single light source did really well and I thought that was absolute badness on all counts, its not even in focus properly and my green 2 entry I thought was really fabulous and its doing poorly. Not the first time either. Most of the images that have done the best for me are ones that I consider pretty crappy compared to the ones "beneath" them score-wise. WHy is this? Is there something I am not getting?

if you have any comments for those photos, try to understand what the voter like or dislike about it. maybe after the voting ends, you could post it up for us all to see and comment? good luck

Well your SLS entry has a very clean look to it, which is what voters absolutely love and is why neatimage is so damn popular here. The more neatimage the better so long as it's not a person's face we are talking about. Not to say you even used neatimage but just illustrating a point. Btw, your entry looks like it has good focus to me.

That's an easy one. It's because people are stupid. :P

Seriously, don't feel bad, because you're not the only one. I've been surprised a few times myself. For instance, my highest-ranking photo isn't my favorite. I like it, but I think I've done better photos. It probably has something to do with my own feelings about the subject of the photo. The people that like it may have different feelings or memories associated with the subject. Who knows? Everyone has his or her own idea of what constitutes a 'good' photo.

I suggest you try to make the photos that you like, and make them so good that others have to like them too. That way everyone's happy. However, if you just want to win ribbons then you need to tune into what others like and want to see. If you do that, they'll be happy, but will you?

I think my highest scoring picture is one of my worst shots. Can't figure out how it did so well. I've got shots that are way better than it, but have scored way lower. Boggles the mind.

Twyla, I do see what you mean; it's easy to look at that shot critically and think it's sort of blah, compositionally. You know what I think it is though? People on DPC react very well to a high level of luminosity in an image, and this one is luminous as all get-out.

Nice work, really!

It did so well because it is clean and crisp and answers the "username" challenge topic unambiguously and effectively; something that can't be said of a lot of the entries in that challenge. Put it in a free study and it wouldn't score anywhere near as well, I'd wager.
