...that has probably been mentioned a zillion times.

I wonder what would happen if we kept the 1-10 voting system but removed the 5. I'm pretty sure the average vote will stay reasonable static but it would make the voter think just that little bit more (maybe).

discuss...

Sounds good to me...it throws the voters off a little and makes them reassess the image.

Oh goodness... makes us think? oy! LOL

Actually the problem with 5 is that most voters assume (incorrectly) that it is true average. On a scale of 1-10 5.5 is the real average. So, Getting rid of the 5 makes 6 average. Hmmm... doesn't that mess things up a bit?

just a differnet version of inflation

i've done a couple challenges where i didn't vote a 5 & it was really hard
some are not 4/s but sure are not 6's ..

Instead of dropping 5, maybe add a big shiny red 5.5 in the middle of the scale, and tell folks that's the actual median score.

What a clever suggestion.....

I would like to see the voting breakdown while the challenge is running.

I gotta idea... How bout we only give voters the choice of 1 or 10! Either you rock or you suck...

Almost as good as the 5.5 reply (that rocks) as for your suggestion maybe all submitters should answer a tie break question ;)

I didn't calculate medians (will do it soon), but the average vote from 1st challenge to April 2006 was 5.14 for open challenges and 5.48 for member challenges.

Trying to find out where I stand in the middle of the pack does not consume a lot of my time. Only the first three places make the front page(I haven't been there yet)...

As to voting I actually do spend a lot of time with the ones I vote 4, 5 and 6 and they get shuffled around quite a bit. It is probably important to someone that they made the top 75%, 50% or 25%.

...or expand the the scale to, say, 20? I'd be giving out more 6s, and those who always elect 1s for the best shots in a challenge would be having a hay day.

Seriously, I don't really give a damn about average scores. Whether the average is off to this or that side by a bit, well, let it. But to have more than 10 grades, hey, that would be fine-tuning what we have now!

Then we'd just have to start complaining about 2's. ;oP

I need 'em for offensive pitchers with purple borders.

Depends on what the pitcher is filled with. I like Sangria myself.

I, for one, am willing to use 4 more often. I say go for it.

Nah... just add zero. People will appreciate those 1's more.

This is an excellent reason to eliminate 5. Then perhaps 0 could be allowed. That way voters would not be able to take a middle of the road stance on an image. The DNMC crowd should like it. It would give them an even cleaner way to rate images low and they are always looking for that. LOL!!!.

I think the voting should be completely random. Just click a "vote" button and a random number between 1 and 10 appears and is locked in. I really don't imagine that would skew the overall statistics at all and frankly, I close my eyes when I vote anyway. ;-)

I think we should entirely remove the 1-10 voting system entirely, and replace it with a slider-bar with sensitivity of 1-100 (dont show the voters, of course) - the concept would be similar to the "save for web" quality slider bar in Photoshop. Voters can now have an "analogue" feeling when they vote, lol
