I signed the paperwork on Tuesday to freelance with the Guam newspaper. About a month ago I signed on to freelance with a publisher of a couple local magazines.

Yesterday, I found out I will probably be having surgery on Tuesday for my compartment syndrome.

Today, I was offered my first assignments by BOTH companies and I had to decline them both due to the surgery! *go figure*

I feel like I already have a black mark on my record with both of them :o(

They will understand.

Oh no no no. Please don't feel this way. I live with chronic pain, which is not nearly what you go through, but I know what it feels like to let people down. But you have to understand - this is NOT your fault. You can not let this make you feel like less of a person. Things happen that are out of your control. Of course you must attend to your health first - you owe that to yourself. So do not worry. You need to do what is best for you, and that is this surgery. Please feel free to PM me if you need support - I can't promise I will get back to you right away but I will try my best.

Sorry to hear, Jen. It will not be the last opportunity you will get. You'll get many more, I am sure. Those feelings won't be conducive to recovery from surgery either, so buck up, girl. :) Smile, we're pulling for you.

Health first, work second.
They should understand. If are good enough you will get other assignments and more work.
Based on your portfolio i'd say you are definately good enough.
:)

don't sweat it, jenn. turning them down is not what gets you black marks. what they care about is reliable competence, meaning that if you accept an assignment, you'll get it done. just keep them apprised of your availability, and you'll be fine.

Thanks everyone. Don't laugh........but things got worse tonight...

I tore my ACL at my soccer game. Just got back from the ER. She is not sure if it is partial or fully torn. I have to talk to my ortho dr tomorrow. She said it may delay my compartment syndrome surgery :o(

I just need an ortho dr to follow me around. Go me.
