Yes. Something unnecessary to your life that you simply enjoy. It can be little or it can be a major mid-life crisis sort of thing like my Dad's spontaneous airplane purchase (which is not my entry, no worries).

ok, thanks.

Do you think I'd have to show me or another person enjoying the luxury, or could it be only the object?
06/07/2006 05:03:04 PM · #4
it could only be the object. Like a very rich looking pie or something.

this is a bit like the comfort challenge, what is an indulgence for me might be a pain for anyone else??

LOL that's true. Like some people love a sauna, but you'd have to drug me and tie me up to get me into one of those hell holes.

Indulgence - It's what you get when you say enough "Hail Mary's"! :)

If I had a child in a poor African country or any country for that matter, holding a bag of M&Ms would you rate that lower or call it a DNMC?

Where a bag of M&Ms may not be an un-necessary indulgence to me, it may be a VERY un-necessary indulgence for the poor person.

When are M&Ms ever a necessity? They have no nutritional value.

They do. They make you heavy enough to survive a hurricane.

We went through a similar discussion for the affluence challenge; I remember in particular a shot of water from someone in an arid region, which scored very poorly, yet for their region the possession of water was the greatest possible affluence...

And the discussion/voting outcome is always going to be the same - it will be based on the relative perception of the voter/viewer/commenter/poster.

Indulgence entries at the top of the heap will be cliche'd eye candy (pun intended). Not being cynical, just realistic and it doesn't bother me in any case.

...now where did I put my cheescake?

Definitions of indulgence:

noun: the remission by the pope of the temporal punishment in purgatory that is still due for sins even after absolution
Example: "In the Middle Ages the unrestricted sale of indulgences by pardoners became a widespread abuse"
noun: the act of indulging or gratifying a desire
noun: a disposition to yield to the wishes of someone
Example: "Too much indulgence spoils a child"
noun: an inability to resist the gratification of whims and desires
noun: foolish or senseless behavior

In Dutch: clementie, toegeeflijkheid, uitspatting

That's all true enough by the dictionary, but the challenge description narrows it down quite a bit:

Indulge yourself this week by photographing an unnecessary luxury. Excess is the name of the game!

Yea, I know...and what seems like an unnecessary luxury to me, is quite normal to others I'm afraid, though I would like to have one of those huge ice making fridges right now, it's getting over 90 degrees here next week, but I think it wouldn't even fit in the kitchen of my little old farmhouse (sigh)

So yeah, it would need to give its message clearly enough that the majority would consider it an indulgence. Whole hog for this one, no skinny slices of bacon :)
