Okay....now I am getting quite a few people query which of my images are IR or not. There are a few threads on this subject floating around now so I thought I would make a thread showing examples of the different angles of this style of photography.

I love Infrared as do many others. This is the type of photography that you either love or hate...no inbetween.

Now here are 3 examples from my own gallery and I will be adding more as they come to light.

I will note that I have found the Nikon D70s better with IR focusing when used in full manual.

Manual Focus (Hoya R72)

Auto Focus (Hoya R72)

(the only alteration was a
clone of some grass on the
right of the image)

Sony DSC F828 with IR Filter

Okay...come on Marbo and others...add yours in as well.

Yea i saw one online for about 50USD just wanted to make sure i wasn't getting ripped. marbo had a good infrared in the beatles challenge. top 10 i think.

Much of the price is what size your lens is. I paid 80.00USD for mine but i use it on my 18-70mm, which is 67mm. That was through B&H.

does anyone know how well the canon 20D does infrared? can it 'see' it well, or would buying a filter be a waste of money?

That one I am not sure. I have tried it on the 5D and it does IR okay...although not as good as the Nikon's.

Do you know about the 350d? Because I was actually planning on getting one today, it was kinda cool that you posted it today.

Hello Judi I just got my Nikon D70s. Can you tell me how to get it into the IR mode? Thanks for all your help.

The D70 doesn't have an IR mode. You have to purchase an IR Filter. I use a Hoya R72. Its priced about mid range, if you got the kit lens, the filter will cost about 80.00. Well worth the money i promise. Again my advise would be to focus in manual and the screw on the filter. The 18-70 is all internal focus so you should have no problems with the focus moving.

Yes that is right...but on that note I find the results are better with manual focus then auto focus...but then again the conditions I am in may have something to do with that. I don't know.

Stuck at work, so this is the only one I had access to. Been shooting IR for over a decade, but just started to play with color.

I ordered my filter a few days ago from e-bay and can't wait to contribute. This looks like awsome stuff that gives me so many ideas!

While theres so many IR users around, does anyone know about price/availability of IR films?? I'm trying to get hold of a Hoya R72, but as my Oly isn't IR-sensitive, I'll just be using it on my Dad's Sony. However, when I go away I obviously won't have access to the Sony, and though I'd try out some B+W IR film photography for a change. I'm worried about how much it will cost though - especially as its inherently risky in terms of exposure/focus.

Anyone got any advice?

Sounds good. I like the composition of your Memphis in IR shot...

Also I'm quite impressed at how still the golfer (you?) stayed during the 2 second exposure stayed in IR driver.

Truthfully I'm not sure if you can even find IR film. If you do you need to know a few thigns. First you still need a filter. Second it MUST be loaded and unloaded in complete darkness. When transporting the film, be sure that you use black tape around the film canister, the film is that sensitive.

I am thinking of having a go at IR photography, the examples here are stunning, but I heard some people have focus issues, dues to IR's wavelenght. Do you have problems and/or is it easy to compensate? I seem to remember 'old' lenses having a mark on them so you could re-focus for IR.

Cheers

I have had no problems with the focus. My advise and what i do is focus manualy and then put on the filter. the diffrence is wavelengths really isn't a factor with digital. Just experiment and have fun. If you have a B&W mode an your camera use it to cut down on post processing. If not don't be alarmed when your shots turn out dark pink to red. Just desat in photoshop.

Anyone got any advice?

Locally, Kodak's High Speed IR is about $12-15 a roll when they have it in stock, which is not that often. Illford̢۪s SFX is not as IR sensitive, but is much cheaper. It too is getting harder to find. Rollei is now making (importing?) a IR film, but I haven̢۪t tried it out.

I wouldn't buy mail order until colder weather comes. I'm not sure how cold it is now in the UK, but I'd wait until the weather is less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Also remember that except for the illford̢۪s SFX that can be changed in heavy shade, IR must be loaded in total darkness. I̢۪d invest in a changing bag. Also I wouldn̢۪t recommend using the R72 with film, as its overkill. In fact the cut off point with the R72 is about at the sensitivity limit with the illford film, so it would be either unusable or require extremely long exposure times. Pleasing results can be had with a red 25a or my favorite a B+W 091 (wratten 29). Both also allow for TTL focusing in bright sunlight.

But your E-500 is as sensitive to IR as just about any other digital SLR. Before I sold mine to get an E-1, I shot quite a lot IR with it. I still use the E-300 for IR that has the same sensor, albeit with a different filter pack. Check out wrotniak.net̢۪s Infrared Photography with the Olympus E-500.

edit: to add a film shot
sorry for lousy scan ($50 flatbed).

Linky to cool article about IR with 10D/20D. ...at the bottom of the page is another link to Color IR with the same.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried the In cam red filter (b/w) with any of the IR Screw-ons. One can get real close to IR with the 20D with in cam b/w filters. If I can find the page I found the quick settings I will post in a bit.
