Don't want to burst your bubble, but if statistically, 5.5 is the midpoint (because there is no zero), 114 people thought it was "below" average. ;)
Actually, I voted a six on this one, but the light on the left is a little harsh.

This is where it gets tough for me anyway. The image is beautiful, but I don't like fruit. I gave it an above average mark because of the photo, but the subject wasn't something that made me go higher than 7.

49 votes in 1,2 and 3.
Here is the thread explaining how I did it.

That's a VERY typical vote distribution for an image that ends up with a high-average score, closer to 6 than 5... And it's about where I'd personally place the image, too; it's fairly striking but the light feels a little harsh (a reflector on the right would have done wonders) and the composition a little bit static. It's not an image that's likely to engage the voters either on an emotional or a technical level. Lord knows I'm a reigning authority on shots like this, and vote distributions like this: I've certainly done it enough times :-)

I received no helpful comments on my single light source image. Why did this do so badly? I do not understand it. Nobody said anything about why they did not like it. What am I doing wrong? I thought this image would do so much better, but without anybody telling me what is wrong, then I will continue to shoot what I consider to be difficult and complicated shots, which seem to get me nowhere.
Based on a comment from xianart, here is the re-edit. I still think it would not have been voted all that well. Anyway, my current gig is to get as many interesting pics as possible of the egg, and I am trying to enter all the future challenges using eggs. Figure if you can use mannequins, then I can use eggs.

55 people gave out scores below 5 for this, 11 trolls even gave 1s and 2s.
All commenters seemed to like it...
When will I understand? |

I gave you a 6. Think most people found it too abstract. |

Thanks for your comment. But how can it be overexposed and too dark at the same time (BTW, there's still drawing in his face, which i admit is very bright, but should be in this lighting situation. Maybe my monitor is too good) |

I always have that issue. What happens is my camera can't sensor right, so it gives too much light to part of the image and too much dark to other parts of the image. Anyway, I see no drawing on the face, just a bright spot. Sorry, I did not mean to make you mad. I will delete the comment. |

I gave you a 7 and I liked the image and especially the shadow but there is a hot spot on the face and that might have made voters give a low score. The problem sometimes is not the monitor being good or bad but the calibration. I saw my own entry really bright and many people said it was too dark. I suggest you check how it looks in at least one more monitor before submitting. |

No, you don't have to delete it, it's absolutely ok. |
