Without going into too much detail I need to darken some midtones in a basic editing friendly way. Can anybody help?

Three options:
Levels works well for what you want to do, pretty easy to slide the mid-tones left and right.
Curves can do it too, but is a little more tricky to work with.
Also, Variations will give you quite a bit of control over how the results come out.

Easiest way to darken midtones in basic editing:
1-Select "Layer->New Adjustment Layer->Levels..."
2-Move grey triangle in middle to right to darken.
Here is another more flexible way to darken midtones in basic editing:
1-Select "Layer->New Adjustment Layer->Selective Color..."
2-Press "Enter" on first dialog
2-Select "Neutrals" (grey) from the "Colors:" popup menu at the top
3-Move "Black" slider at the bottom to right to darken
You move the other color sliders to adjust midtone colors.
Note: Changed for clearer instructions

Shadows and Highlights has a midtone slider. Make sure the Shadows slider and the highlights sliders are turned to 0.
You can use S/H in basic, either as an adjustment layer, or on the pixel layer. I suggest as an adjustment layer. It's also available on both PS and Elements.

Very simple without going into too much detail... Mine is done in Digital Image Pro but same Curves as PS.
Add three points on the histo
2 anchors (red circles) to keep the highs and lows from changing (much)
Move center point (green circle) downward til desired results |

If you want just to darken the midtone-- Id would say adjustment layer/levels.
If you want to darken with contrast I would use adjustment layer/curves.
Start with a "S" curve on the midtones..
Like this then just play around..
Bear in mind I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to Post Proc. :)

Lol Tim, sorry but I tried all the edits and 'the problem' wasn't resolved. Mind you the new crop rocks and is easily worth a 5 :)

I won't be around for the WPL2 test. I'm really hoping my Green II submission will take my run of 6+ scores to four :)
