Yum, whelks!

If you want me to bring you some pickled herring to go with those, just say the word.

I don't really know London at all. This will be a great weekend adventure for me to fly there and whatever the rest of you pick is fine with me! I'm just really looking forward to it, no matter what we do (as long as I don't have to eat any tripe soup, kidney pie or other weird food along those lines).

Tripe soup!!!???? Born and bred Londoner and never heard of this one! :)
And it's steak and kidney pie! Delicious !

How about jellied eels? Could go well with the herrings!

Actually finding any true English food could be more of a problem!!

I vote for the 19th as well

I'm in for the 22nd, at least for the evening.

*bump* for the morning crowd

Bump again. We should really be deciding on a date so those who have to fly in have time to buy plane tickets.

I'm hoping to fly out of London (back to NYC) on the 23rd so the 22nd should be good for me. I'm still trying to get another poorly planned vacation together, as we speak...which seems to have become my preferred style of travel. So don't count on me but kinda keep me in mind.

I vote for August 12 because of the lower airfare then. The 19th of August is the same fare, but I'm excited about this gtg, which is why I vote for the earlier of those two dates.

Well, I'll be in London on the 22nd or at least I'd better be because my flight to NYC leaves from there to the next day.

Whatever you guys decide is cool but I wouldn't mind hooking up with people somewhere along the way. I'm not certain what day I will be getting into town but I hope to have at least 2-3 full days.

Cheers!

Anyone else want to vote for a day? If not I am going to pick the one with the most people that don't have ? next to their name.

Since we need to decide soon, does anyone else have a preference between 22nd July and 19th August? Last chance!

Based on responses so far, it looks like it will be 22/7, the date I cannot do (I will be photographing a wedding). Oh well - next time!

I got on a book on London walks and I found one that I think sounds interesting and worth doing. It is 1.5 miles and the book says it should take at least 1.5 hours. It is a walk through alleyways and buildings of architectural interest and it's called "Legal Eagles at the Inns of Court" Here is the book's description of the walk:

The compact area highlighted here between Temple and Fleet Street is home to some fine buildings that survived the Great Fire of London. Not only that, but to walk through this great legal institution is to take a step back in time. Charles Dickens, who was a keen walker and often covered 20 miles in a day, was a frequent visitor to the area and used it as the setting for some of his novels.

It seems like it's an easy walk and would be suitable for people of all physical condtions (I'm in pretty bad shape myself). It is not the City as I had previously suggested but it sounds like a nice walk. Any comments?

June

Edit: One of the highlights is Temple Church.

My name was taken away from the 19 August list, but you can definitely put it in there ... the flights are really inexpensive from Sweden then.

And Chiqui, your suggestion with the historic walk sounds great!!

My company has an office near this area and it is fascinating to do, especially at weekends when it is quiet. It is also an easy walk/tube ride to Holborn and some of the more interesting stuff in that area, too, walking down to St Pauls.

19th August please. We certainly can't make any date in July and we can only be there on a w/e when LB is also available. If not we will have to do our own walk!!!!

It is a stone's throw from the city. My office is in that area (though I am currently seconded out to Canary Wharf).

It is a very easy walk from the city proper (Liverpool St Station, NatWest Tower, Lloyds Building, Gherkin, Bank of England) up Cheapside past the Guildhall, St Pauls & Paternoster Square, Old Bailey, my office (!) and - into the area where your walk will take place - Ely Place (technically still part of Cambridgeshire), the Prudential Building, the Inns of Court, the Royal Courts of Justice, Fleet Street, Dr Johnston's house, and near the West End/Covent Garden, or equally close to the British Museum and Bloomsbury.

You could do the city proper in 45 minutes or an hour before your Legal Eagles walk. The Inns of Court are truly impressive (although i am sure that there are plenty of places on your walk that I have never visited). They are fairly untouched by modern detritus, and are often used for period dramas. The only problem will be how much of it is closed of a weekend: a fair amount, but then most of it is really only attractive from the outside and/or photography is prohibited inside.

OK, There it's a tie right now between the 22nd of July and the 19th of August. I need at least one of the maybes to pick one or I am going to choose the date. Last chance.....really.

OK, it's not tie, my mistake. So, unless anyone else comes forward today, the date will be August 19th.
